I recently got a T5 slip from my bank in the mail and I could tell that the envelope had been opened and badly re-sealed. I wouldn't usually think that this is a big deal but it had my name address and SIN number and how much money I had on the slip. With all this identity theft going on I'm affraid someone could use this info for financial gain leaving me with the debt and the headache of clearing my name. Anyone have any suggestions on what I should do? Thanks.

Unless there has been fraud on your SIN, HRSDC will not issue you a new number. The best advice is to contact the credit agencies to ensure that no new credit cards or loans have been applied for using your SIN.

Here is the link to the HRSDC website which tells you what to do if your SIN card is lost or stolen:
http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/asp/gateway.asp?hr=en/cs/sin/130.shtml&hs=sxn

Also, watch your tax assessment from CRA to ensure that no one else is working and using your SIN.

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for the link it helps a lot. :thanks:

I would also call your bank and let them know what happened just so that they are aware of it.

As a former Canada Post employee, both as a sorter and a letter carrier, I can tell you that a surprising amount of mail comes open in transit, or is still open when it is mailed. Employees will often seal it just to keep the contents from spilling. Not to say your fears arent justified, but it could be thats all that has happened.
I would keep and eye on things just to be sure.
