OT - Oldest A Child Lost a First Tooth

I'm just curious if there are others out there whose child did not lose their first tooth until they were much older than the "average". My oldest turned 7 in May and still has not lost a tooth. He'll be heading into 2nd grade in the Fall and I have a feeling he's going to be the only one who hasn't lost one yet! The dentist has taken x-rays and we've seen that the adult teeth are there. Guess the baby ones are just being stubborn.

Anyone have a child that didn't lose a first tooth until the age of 7 or later?

My son didn't loose his until he was 7, almost 8 ! Some children get their teeth late and loose them late. Did your son get his first tooth late? Mine did

No! That's the thing. I've heard the same thing about the correlation in ages, but my son got his first tooth at 7 months. I'd expect it from my youngest who got his teeth late (watch...he'll lose his first at 5! ).

Well I can't speak for my own children, as my oldest is 6 and still has all of his; however, one of my nieces is 7 and still hasn't lost any and her sister was 8 before she did!

My oldest lost her tooth the week before second grade started- she had turned 7 June 1. I am a second grade teacher and I usually have one child that hasn't lost a tooth yet at the beginning of the year. This year one of my students didn't loose his first tooth until Christmas time. Don't worry- your son is not alone. Once my oldest did start loosing teeth- she lost a bunch within a few months!

Thanks for this thread. - DS is 6 1/2 and hasn't lost one yet.

His kindergarten teacher had a big poster where she wrote the names of each kid who lost one, and he felt so left out - so I'm subscribing to show him how many other kids out threre are in the same boat!

(And I agree that it doesn't always follow the baby teeth. - He started getting those at 6 months.)

My DS got his first tooth at 4 months and didn't lose his first tooth until he was almost 8 years old! Don't worry...they'll come out when they're ready!

My son was also 7 when he lost his first tooth. His adult one was coming in behind the baby one and i was sooo concerned. I told the hygenist at his cleaning and she said not to worry about it cause his baby tooth would fall out and the adult one would move its way into place. And she was right, his tooth fell out and the new one magically made its way to the front. not sure if his tongue pushed it foward or not. Now he has two more adult ones that have broken through behind baby ones. He can't wait for them to fall out cause the tooth fairy brings disney $$.

DD will be 7 in 7 days and she still has not lost one...She is so upset, but the dentist keeps telling her that the longer she keeps her baby teeth the healthier her adult teeth will be. Her little sister is 3 and has already lost one but only because we had to get it pulled out. She chipped the 2 front top ones and one of them abcessed so we had to pull it. DD6 was so upset that her little sister lost one and got to experience the tooth fairy before she did.

My son was a very late teether. He got his first one 1 week before we had to call a specialist when he was 14 months! He also lost the first very late. He was in 2nd grade and about a week before his 7th birthday. He has only lost 2 since then and has 1 wobbler now. (He's almost 8 going into 3rd) We say that his teeth are cemented into his mouth.

No kids have ever teased him or anything for being late. The worst part for me was thinking he might miss out on the "magic" of the tooth fairy. I thought by the time he lost his first he would be beyond that but he wasn't. I do admit the TF gives him extra each tooth now b/c I don't think he'll be believing it for too much longer

My oldest daughter went all through kindergarten and 1st grade without losing a tooth. I heard her cry many times "I'm the only kid in my class who never lost a tooth", both her classes had posters for kids losing teeth and made a big deal about it. It made me sad that she felt so left out, but that's life sometimes I guess. She finally lost her first tooth in November of 2nd grade (we were homeschooling by then) and lost 4 in quick succession. She did not teethe late as a baby, right at 7 months. She was nine in April and has lost 8 so far. My second daughter has her first loose tooth now, with the permanent one pushing up behind and she'll be 6 next month. Your son is certainly not alone!

My daughter is going to be 10 in September and she has a lot of baby teeth left. She started loosing the front 4 teeth right before she turned 8. We were just at the orthodontist today for a check up. Her teeth are spaced very far apart and some are coming in crooked. We all want her braces on ASAP, but he said today we are likely YEARS away. He said some kids just lose slower than others. He did say that since she is a competitive gymnast and cheerleader that she will likely lose them slower as well as start puberty later (we have to wait until puberty to start a few of the ortho treatments). He said they are not sure why, but being super active like that just causes girls to develop later. On the bright side I get to hold onto all of that money for a little while longer Every time I walk in his office I see $$$ signs.

I lost my first tooth at age 9 and my last baby tooth at age 21!

I sent it to the "tooth fairy" while I was in college, and I actually got cash in return!

I went through braces with about 4 baby teeth still left without a problem.

What can I say... I have weird teeth.

I didn't lose my first tooth until 7 and 2nd grade. My first grade teacher (30 years ago) also made a big deal of lost teeth. She gave out a happy tooth sticker I REALLY wanted. Since I was the only kid in the class who never lost a tooth, I was the only kid who didn't get one. I remember FINALLY losing a tooth, happily showing my former teacher my gap and her running back to her classroom to get me a sticker

The most annoying aspect of having "late teeth" was I was still losing teeth in high school!

My DD7 got her first tooth at 4 mo and lost her first one at school in KG at age 5. She was eating an apple, and didn't eat an apple again for over a year!

My DS6 got his first at 5 mo and hasn't lost any yet. We say he has chicklet teeth, so cute and tiny with no spaces at all. Today I noticed he is finally getting some space between a couplee so maybe soon he'll lose one. It will probably be when his little sister knocks it out (she loves play fighting, but is far stronger than any four year old should be)

My DS7 has not lost any teeth yet and will begin second grade in the fall. He does FINALLY have a wobbler so I'm hoping it may come out at Disney World this week or next We leave in 30 hrs! I told him Tink is a very jealous fairy and does not allow the tooth fairy to come onto her turf but she will compensate him and fedex the tooth safely to the TF if need be

My DD got hers early. Baby teeth were already coming out before she was 5. So she fell and chipped that wonderful new adult tooth! Tell him he has more years to keep that tooth protected, because it has to last a long time. Getting teeth late has lots of advantages.
