:guilty: We are convinced that my 10 year old has a learning disability. He has a hearing impairment and has an IEP for the hearing loss (sound field system in classroom), but receives no special education services because he can function at a level over the threshold for receiving special education services for learning. We understand that there are places you can go to and pay to have an assessment done to find any learning issues. Anybody had any experience with this and have any recommendations? My son is losing academic ground each year, but by the time he qualifies for special education help - he'll be in middle school and then it will be really hard to make up lost ground. Any information is truly appreciated. Thank you.

I need to get to bed, so I can't do a lot of looking around tonight, but you might be able to get some assistance from this website:
www.pacer.org

If he has an IEP, you have rights connected with the IEP, including the right to call for an IEP meeting if it appears your son's needs are not being met. Although I am not an expert, and the rules may be a bit different since my DD did qualify for special education, it sounds like he has unmet needs. The website has a part with advocacy groups for each area of the US. They would be able to help protect your child's rights and should know resources in your area.

You can ask the school to do a Multifactored evaluation. Write them a letter and tell them your concerns. After the "MFE" is done, call an IEP mtg, with the team to sort out the evaluation, write new IEP goals and get the boy help-especially if he's slipping. Kids not only have to keep up, but should improve and if not doing so, then you have to go back to the drawing board. The school should test him after a formal request from you. Good luck.
