I have bought a Graco Sarah crib for the grandchild and looking at WM website for mattresses...some of the inexpensive ones have great reviews but how good are they and what should I be looking at.....this is the first grandchild so not too informed with nursery stuff. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I love cheap and I am the queen of bargains, but be careful with baby mattress'. Many have terrible chemicals in them, that most other countries have outlawed, but we still allow. With the baby laying on them and breathing in the air from them can be really dangerous.

Here is an article to explain what I am talking about.

Many companies are making safer mattress' now. Also, you can get coupons from babies r us and get 20% off of any item and that might help a little with the cost.

By the way, CONGRATS!!! How exciting, a grandbaby! My mom loves having grandkids and is WAYYYY nicer to them than she was to us! :rotfl:

I'm afraid to read the article the previous poster linked! I just bought this one though:

I'm expecting my fourth baby now and our old crib mattress is now 12 years old. It was time for a new one. I thought this sounded the best for the price. HTH

I'm not sure how cheap you're looking at, but I didn't feel comfortable scimping on my Granddaughter's mattress. Babies R Us has some nice mattresses and with a 20% off coupon, that really helps. I bought a Sealy mattress and was pleased with the price I paid. Not only can one use these mattresses in a crib, they can be used in a toddler bed. And if you buy a "quality" mattress, it can be used with seveal grandchildren. :cool1:

Congrats on the addition to your family! Grandkids are the best!

I bought this Sealy baby mattress (link below) at Walmart.com. It was $79 and they shipped it to my house for free. Amazon has the same one, but it is more expensive. This one was recommended in the book "Baby Bargains", and has very good reviews. (Awesome book by the way.)

Some things you want to look for in a baby mattress:

*Very, very firm...pretty much rock hard. This helps prevents SIDS.

*Lots of steel coils. This one has 204.

*All around border rods. Keeps edges and corners firm, especially when the baby starts standing by the rails and jumping on the mattress.

*Steel vertical support rods to keep it from sagging in the middle.

*Very tight fit inside the crib with no gaps. Again, this is to help prevent SIDS. If a mattress doesn't fit tightly, you should return it to the store. (Another reason I ordered from Walmart.com, since I could have taken it back to the local store if necessary.)

Here's the one I bought:

Just another thing I'll mention...don't use those adorably cute bumpers in the crib. They are a major SIDS risk, and doctors now recommend to not use them at all. (Same goes with pillows, blankets, comforters, stuffed animals, etc in the crib.) If a baby is getting their limbs caught in the crib railings, they do make breathable mesh bumpers.

Congrats on the new grandbaby! :)

We picked up a Serta at KMart for $50. They had some cheaper than that.
