So, making my own cakes to save $$ is budget related, right? :thumbsup2

My DS requested an orange cake for his birthday. (21st) I have a great recipe for orange cake but now I need to come up with a filling. I thought about a lemon curd/pudding kind of filling--also an orange mousse. I am just not sure...Any ideas?

Vanilla would be nice - a classic creamsicle! :thumbsup2

Or a white chocolate mousse... mmmm...

They all sound delicious!

Perhaps the one I had at work yesterday? It was a sweet fluffy cream cheese filling with crushed pineapple. It was really good.

Sound delish, but I should mention that DS18 has a terrible allergy to pineapple.:sad1:

When I was a kid my mom used to make a peach cake for us sometimes - I think it was a Betty Crocker mix even then. :confused3 Anyway, she used regular old cool whip for the filling and frosting. It was excellent!

I agree that any middle flavor like a cream cheese, white chocolate, chantilley or just whipped cream middle would be great, but if you can't use pineapple, what about mandarin oranges?

Although I've had chocolate covered fresh orange slices before, and lemme tell you..mmmmm. Nothing says you can't use a chocolate filling!

This reminds me of a recipe I saw in the Paula Deen cookbook for a cake that uses chopped up jelly orange slices. I would HATE that cake, but I've always thought about making it for my FIL who would start drooling immediately ;)

Cream cheese and orange marmalade?

Cool whip and orange marmalade?

Whipped cream and orange marmalade?

Whipped cream or cool whip, cream cheese, and orange marmalade?

Any choice sounds YUM!

OMG, that would be disgusting BUT like your FIL my DBF would LOVE that! LOL For whatever reason he really likes those gross orange slices. lol

OP, I would go with a nice vanilla filling, or even chocolate would be good. Just get some chocolate pudding, mix it with cool whip and there's your filling. :)

I think that a standard vanilla buttercream would taste great as a middle layer & the frosting. Yum!

Mix a container of cool whip with a box of instant pudding (maybe just plain vanilla) add a small container of mandarin oranges chopped juice and all. Blend till thickened. You can always leave out the oranges and just use a little OJ to thicken it all up. Add a little food coloring if you like.

I make an orange cake that has vanilla pudding, whipped topping, pinapple and pecans in the filling. It is delicious.

When my mother made an orange cake, she always made a traditional confectioners frosting for the filling and the frosting, but used orange juice to flavor it.

OP here...We had the cake tonight. I wanted to update you and let you know that I went with an orange cake with white chocolate mousse filling (a thick, thick layer) and vanilla icing on top of the cake. It was beyond fabulous! Thanks for all the ideas!

I made a creamscicle cake yesterday for a family dinner that was well liked. You could use the topping I put on it.

It's instant vanilla pudding, dry orange jell-o mix, 1 c. milk, 1 tsp. vanilla and then mix in 8 oz of thawed cool whip.

To make it stand better as filling I would cut the milk down or up the cool whip.
