A friend of mine is going to New York for a week in August staying about a block off of Times Square. Can you please give me some advice to pass onto her on great restaurants to eat at that a regular tourist would be unaware of? And any other secrets or must go and see or do things that would help her see the real New York?

Thanks!:dance3:

Daisy mays bbq is great and not a long walk if you are going to the intreped museum.

A few other restaurants that are great are :
Tony's Di napoli 2 locations one in Times square, great Italian foood.

Blue smoke it's downtown from times square ,another good BBq place with jazz music downstairs

Don't miss a walk thru little italy or china town for shopping.
If you are in the market for jewelry Canal street in china town is a good opportunity for you to purchase something.
If you plan seeing a show don't forget to use TKTS booth either in times square or better yet downtown at the seaport on water st.is another booth that is never very busy.
with southstreet seaport don't waste much time.

Buy a metro card for the week to use the buses and subways.

If they are staying a week the can easily take a day and go to Coney Island , take the subway and spend that day walking the board walk ride the Cyclone and eat a nathans dog and fries, then hope over to the aquarium.

Plan on doing ALOT of walking.

Central park has alot of great free concerts and plays during the summer check it out.

I really could go on if I knew more about the people planning the trip, Hope they enjoy NYC !!

If they like pizza then the best place to go in NYC is Bella Vita, the one located on 43rd street, it is terrific!!! We went down to NYC last memorial day weekend and we had dinner there, it was great! So much so that we came back the next day to have lunch! Enjoy!

Bella Vita Times Square - 211 W 43rd Street

Thanks for all the great tips! I know that she will have an awesome time in NY with her sister. They are real foodies so I appreciate all the great suggestions of places to eat!:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Not trying to hijack the thread, but it's time for a trip to NYC for a Broadway show. I'm trying to decide between Billy Elliot and Mary Poppins. (Don't suggest any others, I've seen a lot of them already.) A friend of my son's works the concession at Mary Pop and he said she said there's some cool magic in the show, which I hadn't heard about before and has me intrigued.

I was leaning towards Billy, but I've seen Little Mermaid, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast (twice), and Aida so feel as though I have to keep with the Disney momentum and see Mary. :confused3

Thoughts?

I think I've heard better things about Billy than Mary (dying to see it!). My mom (who goes to lots of Broadway plays) liked Mary, but didn't love it.

Lombardi's pizza is AMAZING and Magnolia bakery for cupcakes-can't be beat:thumbsup2 Have fun! Nothing like New York!!

Take the trip to Little Italy if you want some great yummy Italian food. The village has some really interesting places to eat cafes etc.... I wouldn't wait in the Time Square Line for tickets if you paid me. Most theaters have rush tickets if you show up at the theater at a certain time you can get amazing seats right there for much less like $25 a ticket. Some theaters stink they are standing room only tickets or blocked view but I saw hairspray and a few others front row seats $25!!!! Google Rush tickets NYC and it will give you the low down on what theaters do it, what time to show up and how it happens. Mind you I have lost tickets as well doing this but it's still better than that line in Time Square.

Buy a Metro Pass for the Subway better than individual passes and cheaper than the taxi.

Trattoria Trecolori on 47th is excellent! I think it's in the top 3 restaurants on TripAdvisor.

I would definetly go to see Mary Poppins, as I just saw it and it's fantastic. Since I live in New York I have to say please go to www.5napkinburger.com. They literally have the best food & the best burgers in NYC and they are located in Times Square. right off the path away from the crowds. :woohoo:
