OT - My dd5 was hospitalized today

:grouphug:

Gosh, we really do have to be watchful during recoveries, whether illness or injury. I'm glad you got her medical help in time! Who knows if you had waited a day or so! Praying she has a full recovery!

Oh, your poor daughter:sad2: and a hug to you  because this must be hard on you as well.:flower3:

Thankfully the antibiotics are helping the bladder and kidney infections and the finger is not quite as swollen this evening. They will be doing a MRI tomorrow to determine the extent of the infection in the bone. They will then schedule surgery to clean the infection, repair the finger and insert a PIC line. She will continue to receive antibiotics at home through the PIC line for next 21 days. She is in a good disposition and doesn't seem to mind being stuck in the hospital room - I think she likes all of the attention she's getting. The one bad thing is the playroom is closed because of H1N1 but I have taken a selection of toys/movies for her to keep occupied.

Poor baby! Prayers your way for a speedy recovery. At least you have aDisney trip coming up soon to use as a distraction.

Oh I am so sorry to hear this....Thank goodness you caught the problem...it could have been so much worse! Glad to hear she is handling this well! Hope she recovers quickly!

Hugs to you, I think a lot of people might not know how serious a bone infection requiring a PIC line can be. Take care and it's great to know that your DD is doing well with it all. Please keep us updated with her progress!

My daughter was treated last year at St Jude when she was thought to have Ewings Sarcoma in her left upper leg. After many months of testing and a PICC line insertion with IV antibiotics for 6 weeks, the "infection" started to clear. Please dont be intimidated by all the medical jargon that you will learn and have to deal with. My hubby kinda was. You will have to learn to clean, clean again, do antibiotics, clean again, etc. You can do it. Will it be hard? you bet! Will you be tired? You bet! Will your dd have enough before it is over? you bet! But, you can do it and she can too. We also went thru one weekend of dd having a reaciton to her antibiotics. We had to go to the doctor's office where we live while the St Jude doc (they are sooo awesome) talked the doc thru how much benadryl to give prior to. That did rattle my cage a bit. But, she is now a healthy almost 11 year old that can run, climb trees and would not know that happened if not for the memories and of course the scar from the bone biopsy. She was in a lot of pain and thank goodness we were at St Jude where they are well versed in pain management.

A funny disney related story--we got back on a sunday night (we spend many many nights, days, weeks there for months-and while the guard at the gate was getting our license info, etc for us to get to the Grizzly hotel on campus, dd said "welcome home" like the disney cast members say, :rotfl2::rotfl2:

She continues to compare St Jude to disney, it is a very happy place. That is a testimony to what a wonderful hospital it is, and they saved me 39 years ago!

Good luck and hugs to you!!

That is a big blessing indeed. Glad to hear everything is find with her and you all made it though that bad time.

WE ARE HOME!!! She came home last night with oral antibiotics. Luckily we didn't have to have the PIC line. Her finger does look a bit more swollen this morning but hopefully that's just a lull between one medicine and the next. She came home with the first 13 bottles of antibiotic (out of 21) - she will take an entire bottle a day - 12 tsp a day for 21 days. They said it was the nastiest of the nasty's but she seems to like it.

ok now that everything is fine, and good, :thumbsup2 what the heck were you thinking having a 5 yr old in a batting cage, what speed was the machine set at, heck I'm scared in those things, never mind a 5 yr old...

lecture over

She was in a slow pitch softball cage (30 mph) and she had a helmet on. That's as safe as anyone can be in a batting cage - it could just have easily been ds8 or dd25. She's never played ball of any sort and it was her 1st time in, she didn't know that you were supposed to move if the ball came at you - it was plenty slow enough for her to get out of the way.

She may still not be out of the woods on this - her finger is started swelling really bad again over the weekend. I'm calling the pediatrician this morning to see if he wants her to come in or wait for her appt on Wednesday. She has 3 appointments in the next week - pediatrician on Wednesday, Orthopedist on Thursday and Infectious Disease next Monday.

Maybe it was a bad decision letting her go in but I've always let my children try things and do things - it's how children grow and develop independence.

Poor kid! I hope she can get in earlier.

DO NOT beat yourself up for allowing her in the batting cage! It was an accident. You would be doing your kids a disservice if you wrapped them in bubble wrap and never allowed them to try new things. {{hugs}}

Don't let other people judge you! I was in the cages around that age too. Ask my coaches if it was worth it or not! City champs for baseball, league champs for softball and I had a huge batting average. :thumbsup2 Even if she's not in training for anything, they're still super fun!

Stay diligent and hopefully that pesky infection will get moving. :grouphug:
