OT - Living in Miami?

Hey y'all... a little OT but have a question that I thought folks on this board might have some insight on. I have a job opportunity that would take me from NYC to Miami. I've visited Miami and have enjoyed my time there - but does anyone have any insight into how living in Miami as a gay person is?

Also, is WDW driveable for a weeked trip

I personally prefer Fort Lauderdale. It's basically one big metro area, but unless you are either very lucky or very well-to-do, it can be tough to find a nice place in Miami that's in a decent area. From Ft. Lauderdale to Miami is about a 20 minute commute, so it's not bad. That whole are of South Florida has a very large gay population, and there is plenty to do.

And from Miami to Disney: About 3-4 hours (depending on how fast you go on the turnpike )

If you have a partner, don't do it! Way too many distractions if you know what I mean.

I agree that the Ft Lauderdale area would probably be a better choice for where to live (and play) in South Florida. We live in Aventura, which is halfway between Miami and Ft Lauderdale and I can tell you that 9 times out of ten, we go up to Ft Lauderdale (Wilton Manors is the "gay" city).

Unfortunately, WDW is far enough away to warrant a hotel room when we drive up. I haven't done the same day trip to WDW since I was a kid.

Having lived and worked in Miami for several years, I will give my insight. As the previous poster said, Ft. Lauderdale/Aventura area would be a much better choice.

Lots of people associate Miami Beach with Miami, and the 2 are totally different. There is a huge catholic/latin culture in south Miami, and is not as tolerant as say, Miami Beach, North Miami, or Aventura, or Ft. Lauderdale. Whereever you choose to live, buy a gun, LOL.

Bah, the hotel stay is half the reason!! Gives you an excuse to take a few days off!

I (and BF, for that matter) have also lived in both Miami and Fort Lauderdale. I much prefer Lauderdale to Miami. It's much easier to get to gay places in Fort Lauderdale unless you are way out west (and there are some of us who prefer that). I never went out when I lived in Miami(specifically South Miami on the south side of Coral Gables near Kendall) because it was always such a chore to get to I-95. Most of gay life is in South Beach though that may be changing if I can trust the Hotspots Magazine. As for living in Lauderdale and working in Miami, it's done all the time (I'm doing it myself). If your job location allows it, you may be able to take public transportation (which I also do). It's a chore but it will save you wear and tear and gas.
