OT: LIVE Report from Colonial Williamsburg: Final PHOTO update

Dave:

Oh my gosh...it looks like you are having a wonderful trip. You have pictures of things I have never seen and I have been to Williamsburg a lot.

Enjoying your report. Can't wait until you go to Busch Gardens.

Enjoy the rest of your trip.

Between you and Aaron, I think I'm going to have to do a TR for NYC.

I'd be curious to read a TR for NYC Don. Are you going for business or vacation? I've never really visited NYC. I've been 2x, but only for the day and never stayed overnight. I'm itching to go.

Dave you need to go to NYC. Former job sent me to NYC several times a year. It is a great place to visit. Our favorite hotel is the Mariott Marquis right in Times Square.

Highpoint for my daughter was standing out Trump tower when Donald came out. Lots of great things to do in NYC.

Good Morning Everyone: So last night we had dinner in one of the colonial taverns in Williamsburg. Shield's Tavern built in 1745.

Some reviews don't care for Shield's because you can get sat in the basement and it's very dark. We ended up in the basement - or wine cellar as they called it. It is dark, but we loved it. It was a welcome break from the very strong sun yesterday, and it was nice and cool.

Musicians would come by playing period music.

And Mr. Shield makes the rounds making sure all the guests are happy. Mr. Shield is a real character, and had everyone laughing.

This was our splurge dinner for the vacation, and we really enjoyed it. I had a beef potroast over mashed potatoes that was delicious. DW really liked a seafood chowder she got, and the berry crumble dessert was fantastic.

After dinner we had tickets to an evening performance called "Cry Witch" in the courtroom of the Capitol Building.

This was a reinactment of a witch trial, and had a warning that some parts may not be appropriate for young children. However, we thought our girls were old enough for it.

You are sitting in the courtroom, and we even had seats in the jury. The performance occurs all around you, and you are swept up in the events. We are permitted to ask questions as justices as jury, and in the end the audience decides the innocence or guilt of the accused. [Our audience overwhelming decided she was guilty.]

This was really well done, and the girls were on the edge of their seat the whole time. It really held their attention, and in the end we discovered that the trial was based on a real case and real person. It was very interesting.

Going for vacation Dave, taking all 3 kids and the MIL. I imagine we won't be out too late so I should have lots of time to post a report every night. We leave 2 weeks from Friday.

Today's a rest day for us. We have no plans at all. There's a frozen lasagna in the freezer of our condo for dinner, and we have "National Treasure" to watch for a family movie tonight. We'll see what we end up doing. DW mentioned she wanted to go shopping or maybe to Water Country, USA (a big water park here). Surprisingly, when we mentioned Water Country to the girls, they said they would rather stay in Colonial Williamsburg.

So, that made me feel good that they are really enjoying the history here. I have to say Colonial Williamsburg does a really good job in presenting the historical lessons. We've gotten a lot of information out of it, and it's done in a fun, not boring at all, way.

I agree Kathy, we really do need to go. I really would like to try to go for a quick weekend trip this summer. I'd love to get there before Little Mermaid closes on Broadway. Maggie (DD11 princess: ) would just do anything to see it. I'll keep the Marriott Marquis in mind if we can get there.

Sounds like fun Don. How old are your kids again? Our girls (8 and 11) have been eating up all the history here in Williamsburg. We've been having a great time.

Kids are 10, 8 and 4 right now. I know my boys would love it, but waiting for the 4 yo to get a little older. We might go for it next summer though, I'll be in touch to get your ideas if so :)

Yeah, I would agree about the 4 yo. I think our girls are just at the right age, but there is lots of stuff for the kids to do. I recommend the brickyard... I think our girls could have stayed in there all day.

My Swan friend was back this morning. I named him Lynn. Ask Kathy if you need an explanation.

Hey Everyone: We're in our condo today cooking our frozen lasagna. We had a pretty laid back day. We went to a folk-art museum in Williamsburg. One of the appeals to us was that you had to enter through an 18th century hospital. Turns out it was the first ever hospital for the mentally-ill. Since Dana and I are both neuroscientists, we had to see this...

DSC03856.jpg

I tell you, the hospital rooms didn't look much different than the jail. The girls were surprisingly interested, and Evie (DD8 pooh: ) even wanted to go back for another look.

Aaah, a good era for neuroscience...

I have to say it was really odd that you had to enter the folk-art museum through the old mental hospital, but who am I to judge... :confused3

We then made it to the museum. They had some really amazing dollhouse displays that the girls liked.

And some great old train displays.

The museum was a nice break from the intense sun.

Dana (DW) then went to do some shopping, and I took the girls to the Palace Green to play some 18th Century games.

Then we headed back to the condo, Dana rested, and I took the girls to the pool. It was a nice day.

Unfortunately, we received some news during our way back to the condo that may cause us to end our trip early. Dana's Grandmother's - who is 101 years old - health has taken a sudden turn for the worse. The care facility has asked the family to gather round. We expect she will pass away very soon. :sad1:

Dave, I will keep Dana's grandmother and the extended family in my prayers.
Thanks Kathy. She has lived a full life, and it's not totally unexpected. On her 101st birthday this past May she decided she was going to stop taking all medications and go out on her own terms. It will be sad, but she is ready and hopefully comfortable.

She sounds like a great lady. My best to you and your family.
