OT: lego bday party

trying to find a neat idea for DS's 6th bday party. Best friend is having a Clone Wars party 2 weeks before,so wanted something different. Likes Indiana Jones too, but some kids his age don't really know Indy. Anyway, thought about a "bowling" party, not actually going to an alley, but finding ways to turn everyday activities into bowling fun. DS is also huge Lego fan. So had some thoughts, like "how many legos in the jar", who can build the highest tower in one minute as some game ideas. For any lego lovers, what else could we do? and what sort of "treat bag" could be made. I did see some small lego sets for $5.99 and there are lego fun fruits, but $7-$8 per treat bag seems high.
Any birthday plan help greatly appreciated.

You can make a lego shaped cake, too! (rectangular cake & use cupcakes with the tops cut off for the ...whatever the technical term is for the round parts on the lego).

My son went to a b'day party recently where the goodie bags contained small K'nex sets (not lego but close) & they each had maybe 7 pieces in them. When I see the b'day boy's parents I'll ask where they got them...I'm sure they couldn't have been very much money.

Definitely lego fun fruits or how about getting a big box of legos & bagging up some pieces for each bag? I'm the type of psycho that would be making lego bar cookies (ooh! Using M&Ms for the round things) and lego pizzas (ooh! rectangular pizza with "round" cheese).

I'm lousy at coming up with games, though. Pin the round thing on the lego?

I was going to suggest this cake, too! - I don't remember what magazine I saw it in, but it looked really good, it seemed easy, and I bet the kids the kids would love it.

I think the Lego jar guessing game is great, too! And you could definitely buy a regular set and break it up in the goodie bags if you don't find little sets any cheaper.


Adding to the games list -

Build Lego cars and have races.

Divide into teams and build Lego bridges. The longest one that will hold up the (whatever little item you pick) is the winner.

Play "jacks" with Lego pieces instead of jacks.

Birthday Express has Lego plates and things. Even if you don't order, often the catalog will have some cute ideas on the page that you can borrow.( I often "match" with something less expensive.)

Good idea! Everything sounds cute so far. We are starting to plan my DS's 6th bday,too. He loves Legos but we had not thought of that for a party theme.....

Lego has little sets now with a person and a little thing with them, kayak is one, hospital patient another, alien and small ship, they are $3.49 each and would be great for the bags.

Aside from some of the other ideas already mentioned these are the only things I can think of doing.

First off I was thinking it might be possible to make a huge lego pinata. The kids will love it even if it isn't perfect.

If you have the space, you could check with any local applianace stores and get some boxes. Those big frig boxes tend to be the cheapest and most fun party ideas. For my kids end of the year party at preschool I got three and painted them, one like a school bus and the other two were simply painted tunnels. It was easy and took maybe two hours of work. I am sure there is a way to make them into a giant legos.

How about a lego hunt? Just hide them like its an easter egg hunt.

I was thinking of having the kids make a craft when they got there. Then afterwards they can run all over the place in the boxes or do the lego hunt. lol Anyway, my thought was to use those firm poster boards you can get and cutting them into rectangles and letting the kids arrange the legos to make their name ( if they are younger I would most likely write the names on the poster board as a guide.) then as they are playing with something else. you could hot glue them to the board. making a cute gift and activity.

Finally for favor ideas.. oriental trading has little cake boxes and I was thinking they could be made into legos. Then you can fill them with little treats, like a lollipop, a lego fruit snacks, or whatever and then use the box as a weight for a balloon. you could place them on the tables and such as decoration and then give them out at the end of the party

About a month ago I was at the Lego store in the Bridgewater Mall in NJ and they had some Lego Spongebob character keychains on sale for 99 cents! They were cheaper in the store than the catalog (full price $4, still cheap.) My son will be having a Lego party in Nov. It's just family, only 6 kids. I was in KMart the other day and they had their tubs of legos clearanced , then another 20% off. Needless to say, I bought 6 of them--THEY are the goodie bags. Nothing else, just the big tubs of legos for the cousins. Came to about $11 each, but its for family, so I didn't mind.

Thanks so much for the great ideas !!
I love the cake, but never seem to bake a good one myself. Our local grocery makes great cakes. I may see if they would do it as like a 1/4 sheet cake w/ either the cupcake tops or sugar cookies frosted for the little connecters. Then I could spell out his name on it w/ the lego gummies so the kids could eat !!
Keep the ideas coming...I have 3 hours to fill !!

I'm a mom of twins and a big lego fan. Love the lego party!!! One year my boys had a car party and one activity was a car building contest. I had a big pile of legos on a sheet on the floor (easy clean up). They then had about five minutes to build a car. Of course, everyone won in different catagory. Tallest car, biggest car, smallest car, best use of windows, etc. Winning and loosing is fine for some games, but not this type of contest.

This would work for other things too- houses, sculptures, etc.

Also, we always served lunch at birthday parties. It takes up time. Have an activity the kids can move on to as some will finish eating before others.

Boys with no direction end up in what I call "the whirlwind". They literally run in circles unless you direct them somewhere.
