OT: KINDEL OR NOOK??? would like to hear from both!!

My best advice.....

Make a list of books you'd like to read

Look at the Amazon and Barnes and Noble book stores to see which book store offers the best selection and best pricing.

You will find people to sing the praises of both. Do your own research and figure out which one will work best for you.

Amazon has a Kindle discussion forum (which is highly searchable). There are 100s of discussion threads about the merits of both.

After reading all of this information and being dazed and confused....my advice still stands.

The bottom line is that you are getting a reader. You are going to want to buy books.

I just wanted to throw in a vote for the nook. I have had mine since December and I love it. I have never had one freezing problem and it runs very smoothly. I love the design of it and I think it is easy to use.

One thing the nook has over the kindle is and open format system. This means that you can purchase books from other ebook sellers or if a library near you offers ebooks then you can borrow them. Kindles can only use books purchased off of Amazon.

Honestly I think they are both great devices. I liked the look of the nook more and I've always gotten my books from B&N so that influenced my choice between the two.

Manda is the wifi aspect a problem? I would have hands down chosen the nook if it had the network that a kindle has.

I agree that I like the look of the Nook laughing better but I want to be able to download anywhere I am just so confused

its like the more research I do the harder the decision becomes!!!

If you haven't had a chance to see the Kindle in person, I believe Target is starting to sell them.

I will say this - I had some initial trouble with our Kindle. Amazon customer service was quite good about helping me, and I recently read a blog post about another person having some trouble with an out-of-warranty Kindle and Amazon providing outstanding customer service. If you aren't in a hurry, you might check out the rumors that Amazon will be rolling out a Kindle 3 in August (only rumors, and Jeff Bezos appeared to shoot down the notion that it might have color).

Finally, Len Edgerly does a wonderful podcast every Friday on the Kindle and e-readers generally called "The Kindle Chronicles." I try to listen to it every week. Len's production quality of the podcast and knowledge about the Kindle reminds me of the kind of commitment the podcast crew has to all things Disney, and I enjoy listening to him.

Kevin has very good advice. Also, if you have friends who have either one, or the iPad or Sony Reader, tool around with them in person, if you can. They each have their own little operating quirks, and you might be partial to one over the others.

Good luck with your choice. It was a hard one for me. I think you will be happy with either device.

I've had my Kindle since Christmas and I love it!

But, Kevin's right. The best way to pick a reader is to decide who's got what you need.

It is really awesome to shop and download a book to read while waiting in the doctor's office...just saying.

I just purchased a Nook on Thursday and have been playing around with it a bit and I love it. The touch screen part can be a bit awkward to use at first but I think I got the hang of it. I think it is really just a decision that comes down to personal preferences. I can not wait to actually get into reading with as I am in the middle of the newest Kingdom Keepers book.

I have a Kindle and absolutely love it. If I had a Nook I would probably feel the same way. Mine was a gift, so I didn't have to make the decision about which one to get. Either way, they are fantastic. I have been able to download books from non-Amazon sources, and the wife has been able to download books while overseas (which you aren't supposed to do - I think it might be because her connection is routed through the US).

I will say that mine saved me from having to move to a bigger apartment. I was at (or beyond) capacity on books, and it was starting to get pretty bad. The one thing that bothered me at first was not being able to read in the bathtub, but then I figured out that I could just put the thing in a zip lock bag, and still be able to turn pages. D'oh.

*NikkiBell*, I chose the Nook for a couple of reasons. The first being that I just do not like the way that keyboard looks on the Kindle. Second, I was able to see it in person and I liked the way it felt in my hands and the overall look of it with the touchscreen on the bottom. I also really like the idea of being able to go to my local B&N and reading an ebook for an hour. Now being in NYC I have access to many different stores so its easy to get to one. I"m sure the Kindle is a great device but I just felt that the Nook was a better fit. I also like the idea of a microsd card in it with music that I can listen to while I read. It just saves me from having to carry around my zune if I do not want to.

What a great idea! I love reading in the tub with my Lush bubbles and bath oils. A zip-lock baggie! You're right D'OH!!!!!

I just got the Nook today for my birthday!!! I'm so excited and wasn't expecting it at all. I have been playing with it for about an hour but have yet to purchase a book to put on it. I like that you can lend books to friends. Now I just have to find someone else that has one that I can share books with
