Okay, maybe this is a lot strange, but we went to a childrens museum today and they had a little platform thing built. It had high rails around the top part, a little ladder attached and was carpeted. Now I want to build one in DSD or DSSs bedroom. I figure I could make it big enough for their mattress and a little extra space for whatever. Or maybe even put their mattress underneath and let them use the top part for whatever. I just like the loft idea. This is too crazy though right?

I think it is a great idea. One of my good friends in high school had her dad build her a loft in her bedroom and it was great. She put her mattress on top and then had a desk underneath. It may her tiny bedroom seem so much bigger. I say if your kids are old enough to sleep safely in one then go for it. :thumbsup2

We built em in our college dorms and i brought mine HOME with me after college and used it in our spare bedroom, it was great!! Dont make it too close to the celing tho,,,one of my suitemates keep hittin the scratchy popcorn~CELING everytime she turned over! OUCH!!:rolleyes1

When hubby was in college, his roommate's dad helped construct a massive loft... both of them had their beds up high with desks underneath... it was like two lofts, but they were connected. They went from one wall to the other, which I suppose was purposeful for the extra support of keeping the beams snug against the walls.

Great space-saver! Go for it! You're not crazy at all... you're pretty smart! :thumbsup2

Another option -- if you don't want to build one, we bought IKEA's Kura reversible bed. We have it so it's a low loft, and have a mattress on top (for sleeping) and mattress underneath that it their "fort." My kids LOVE it.

I saw one built by one of those home improvement shows once. I think that Ty Pennington built it for a single mom or something? Might be worth searching if you want to see some instructions/ideas.

We are thinking about finishing out the attic above the kids bedrooms and putting a loft type ladder. Then they can put bean bags up there, bookshelves, TVs/Games....etc and it's an extra space for them.

My sister had a great one in her room as a child. She had high ceilings, so they built it right over the doorway. It extended halfway into the room. You could walk into her room and not even notice the lofs was there. It was a great place to hide!

DH is planning to build one for our daughter's dorm room at college. She moves in next week and he's taking measurements then. She plans to make it high enough to put a desk under the bed. If her roommate wants, DH will build one for her too - he said it isn't goiing to be expensive. He can do it pretty much with material he has on hand.

I've been wanting to do that in our DS's room. I wanted to have their beds on the loft and then underneath for a desk or toy storage. They have a small room and they have to share a room, so I would to maximize the space in there better. I am just not sure of mine or my DH's construction skills to let my kids sleep on it or play underneath it.
