Hi, there! My kids aren't ready for tutors yet (they're only 2! :rotfl: ). I have a friend who doesn't speak English, and she's looking for a tutor for her 11yo. She wants to start finding one now before school starts back up so her kid doesn't "lose" all he'd learned by the time September rolls around. She figured that I might know since I went to school in America...yeah, but it's been...eh hmmmm...a long time.

So how do you find tutors for your kids these days? Can you find one through the web? Do you go to the schools? Is it hard to find a private one who'll come to your house? What's the going rate for a tutor?

Sorry for all the questions. I just have no clue! If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd be most appreciative!

Thanks! :thumbsup2

There are often ads in your local newspaper for tutors or you can run one yourself. Some public schools maintain lists of tutors, and if you have a local college, they might have lists as well. Unfortunately, since school is out in most placers, it may be hard to reach anyone at a local school who can help. You can also go with a commerical tutoring business, such as Sylvan. Check your local phone book as well as the web.

I'm in the Atlanta area and a tutor. I get my students primarily through the local high schools and word of mouth. I am on "tutoring lists" at a few of the local high schools. I would tell your friend to check at local schools or if you or your friend know some teachers they probably have some tutors they would recommend. I personally tutor out of My home (but my students mostly can drive). Depending on the area (and experience and degree level) I would expect to pay anywhere from $40-75 dollars an hour.

Can't you just be your kids' tutor yourself?

Jenny, I'm inquirig for a friend who does not speak English. She can't tutor herself because she didn't get more than an elementary school education when she was in the Old Country.

Thanks for the ideas. I think a commercial business like Sylvan will be pricey for her, but I'll pass the info along with the other ideas. Other than that, it seems that schools and word of mouth are the prevailing methods. Hmmm...

Anyone have any others? Thanks for the info so far! Keep 'em coming!

Sometimes public libraries maintain lists; call the reference dept.

Also try CraigsList.

Depending on what subject the child needs to be tutored in, you might check around with the high school kids in her/your neighborhood. (If it were during the school year, I'd say contact the school.) I would think there would be kids that age willing to tutor a younger child, and would be pretty reasonable for this woman.

It would obviously have to be someone who was good with kids, and good in the tutoring subject. They would not have the teaching skills of a professional, but I think if the child is willing to learn and assuming he does not have any learning disabilities, this might work out well.

You could also check at some organizations that high school kids might frequent, such as the local Y.

We have always used students from our local college. Call the student employment office and ask is they have any tutors available. We have always had to take the kids to the school library for their sessions.

We found an excellent tutor for our son by way of a teacher reccommendation.

I won a 4 month "scholarship" to Score! (which is along the lines of Slyvan) and my kids have really enjoyed it and seem to be learning. Try investigating a place like that.

Teacher here... I suggest calling the school the girl will be attending & asking them to recommend a tutor.

Tutors for that age get anywhere from $30.00-$40.00 per hour around here.

Well, Daisy beat me to my answer. My sister teaches 5th grade and also tutors. (Not her own students though.) All of hers have been contacts from people at the associated middle school looking for tutors. It is very sweet of you to help your friend like this.
