OT Homeschool--so how early do window shop for the next year's curriculum?

Whenever you start your year--when do you start looking!



It's January and I sooo want to start making my pickings!

Some things I know and some I don't!

I love the Rainbow Resource Catalogue and will be looking at that for some items (mostly the *office/classroom supply* type stuff).

New stuff for this year--Story of the World (I think--still on the fence) and not sure of anything else at the moment.

Debated the 2nd level of the reading curriculum we have or wondering if I should switch to a first grade program as what we are doing has clicked and i it is just a matter of completing the worksheets (for having the skills set in her mind). We do have 2 vowels left, but I think those will be a piece of cake.

So--have you started window shopping yet?

This was our first year homeschooling and we went with a single curriculum (Alpha/Omega), party due to changing from online to workbooks about a month after starting and partly because we had no idea what we were doing. We now know which parts we like and what we don't so we can look for other things. Who knows, we may change the whole thing.

I guess I'm fortunate in that we have two curriculum fairs here, one in May and one in July. While I've been looking a little on line, I REALLY need to see some of this stuff. So we're going in May to see what's out there.... but not buying anything. We'll make our choices and go back to next one in July or order online.

So, we're already looking, but just not seriously.

LOL well, I feel like I shop year round!!! This year, in our fourth year with DD I thought we had everything done and set. Then half way into fall, I decided that both she and I were bored out of our minds with Singapore math so now we are doing a combo of a McGraw hill book and the Key to.....math workbooks. I also bailed on Intermediate Language Lessons and switched to Writing Strands, starting with the book they tell you to start with which I have determined is way too hard so now we are switching to the previous book.

DS is only in K and I already have gone back and forth and switched all around with him too. I was going to get HWOT and then decided not to and now have decided that I really should as he is such a hands on learner. I started out a lot more traditional, then this month switched to Five in a Row and he hates reading the same book everyday so that is not going well. I am looking at both Math U See and Moving With Math and not sure if I will get them now and start right away or get them at the conference I go to in April. (Which is probably a much better idea.)

What I do love for sure is our history. And Lisa, it is Story of the World! We are on our second year and we do it with our co-op. I sort of wish we did it at home because then we could spend as long or as short as we want on each chapter. My one thing that bugs me with that is at the end of each ch in book 2, she does not tell you the years it covers as she does in book one. I do have a really awesome Usborne Medieval times book that has a timeline in it so I use that.

So, my very long answer is that in 4 years, I don't feel like I have stopped looking. Maybe I should start a thread about that!

I never stop! This is our first year and we have already changed a few times.

Singapore math was the first to go. My kids didn't go for that at all. I am considering Math u See but in the meantime we are just using some simple workbooks. I wanted to give a little break between programs. Does anyone have an opinion to share about Math u See?

For Language Arts we've used some Spectrum grammar and phonics books along with wordly wise 3000. I am considering writing strands. Right now we don't really do "formal" writing, but I have them write in their journals several times a week. We are taking a break from spelling at the moment because both my ds and dd are natural spellers so I 'm focusing elsewhere for a little bit. I want to buy the Calvert spelling cd-rom - I think they might like it. We live across the street from the library so we round it out with lots of trips over there.

We love our history program! We are using Winter Promise American History 1 and it really fits us. My dd actually said aw man today when I said we were finished!

For Science we are studying a bit about animals. We also have been doing some experiments we find on the internet. My dd plays a computer game called I love Science that she loves. My son likes to read about things like dinosaurs and weather. Eventually I would like to get a bit more focus in science.

Oh I bought a typing cd-rom with Timon and Pumba that is really cute. I thought they should learn some basic typing.

I am sure I will keep shopping!
