My son,2, has pink eye really bad and its not going away. here is the whole story

10 days ago- woke up with goop in eye (yes he goes to daycare) so I gave him drops that I had at home left over from b4 (I know u r not supposed to do that but i did). It cleared up with in 4 days. Then we went to visit some1 who had dogs and lots of dog hair all over house. At this persons house my son was really rubbing his eye (I could see the hair flying around so i thought maybe allergies) ever since then he cant stop rubbing his eye. His eye has been really red inside and out and getting kind of puffy. We took him to the Dr 4 days ago and they said it was pink eye. They said sometimes pink eye can make the outside of ur eye pink and swollen. They gave us drops. He's been on the drops a few days and it seemed to clear up. Today its back to being really red and swollen! He seriously looks like he got knocked in the face like a black eye. Whats up with this? I'm really concerned, i dont know what to do. Does pink eye really make your eye swollen and red inside and out? Has any1 ever ahd pink eyey like this? Thanks

I would call your doctor. My daughter back in Jan eye did the same thing and they were afraid of Cellulutis(sp?) of the eye. They kept her over night int he hospital. It was just a infection from something she rubbed in her eye. I don't want to scare you but it doesn't sound like Pink eye. Just call the doctor.

Did they say if it was viral or bacterial? My kids get "pink eye" but it is due to allergies/sinuses and not contagious. The drops help but they usually need oral meds also. My dd5 needs both Benadryl and an antibiotic when she gets it. They said its because her sinuses are so small that when she gets a sinus infection the gunk has no where else to go and it comes out her eyes...causing the pink eye. a few days on antibiotics and she is fine..

Pinkeye is really hard to clear up. Just because it looks like it has cleared up, doesn't mean that it is gone. You MUST finish the dosage for the full amount of days. 7-10 days. You will see improvements by day 3or4 but you really should continue treatment for 10 days!!! Wash all pillowcases, bedding and towels.

Good luck!!!!

Bacterial pink eye will clear up with the drops. Viral pink eye will not. You just have to let it run it's course, which can be a couple weeks.

Because this seems to be getting worse, I'd take him into the doctor. You don't want to mess around with eye infections. If need be, ask for a referal to an opthamologist.

I had a really bad kind of viral pink eye when DD was 6 months old. An urgent care and my primary care physician both prescribed the standard antibiotic drops. They weren't working and I was in serious pain. I finally got my PCP to give me a referral to see my opthamologist. He diagnosed it as something called EKC, which is a nasty viral pink eye. He gave me some pain relief drops which was really all he could do for it. But it was comforting to know what it was I had and that it would clear up on it's own in a couple weeks.

You will have to have some kind of medicine for it to clear up. I hate pink eye!

Like PP said, it depends on the type of pink eye it is. If it is bacterial, it will clear up with the medication, but make sure you follow the directions and use it for as long as it says. Also, does your LO get pink eye often? Sometimes they become immune to the medication and the doc has to switch it up. If it's viral, may take awhile to run its course. Clean the sheets everyday as well, it is a real bugger to get rid of. If you know anyone that is breastfeeding, try some breastmilk in the eye, it seriously works wonders! :rotfl:

Same thing happened to my DD and we happened to see a different doc when I brought her back in. Turns out it was a sinus infection that got in her eye and she needed a shot of antibiotic and very strong antibiotic for 7 days. The doc was fuming at the nurse practicioner that assumed it was pink eye.

Pinkeye should look better by day 4, not worse. What you describe sounds like symptoms of periorbital cellulitis, a serious infection of the orbit around the eye. Call your ped and tell them what it looks like. Don't delay!

this is what they thought my daughter had in Jan. Luckly it wasn't but you never want to mess with the eyes. It never hurts to call the doctor.

He had the drops again today and now it looks better (almost back to normal) but he still occasionally rubs his eye. When he rubbed it earlier 2day his eye got really red and a little swollen but now looks ok. The dr said it was contagious he also said if it doesnt clear up in a week he should see an optimologist. This is just really weird cuz it did get better at first then got really bad for a few days and now 2day it seemed to have gotten a little better, lets see what tomarrow brings! Its just nerve racking waiting it out. And I've never seen pink eye make ur eye swollen! its almost as if the bags of his eye were puffed out. Hopefully since it looks good as of now tomarrow morning it will look good also. If it doesnt I'm def. calling the dr back. Thanks for all ur help
