This morning I dropped DD (5) off at a friends house (they walk to school together). We usually don't go in, but it was raining and I wanted to ask the mom if it was ok if I drove her DD to school. The girl is 8 and in 3rd grade.

The mom said that would be great...her DD would be ready in a minute, she was just finishing up breakfast. The girl was drinking milk from a baby bottle.:confused3

Is it your kid? NO then don't worry about it. Her parents can do what they please....

We don't have bottles at our place but I don't care what anyone else does.

That's such a bad idea. I wondre if this mom knows the dental damage she is causeing by allowing her DD to dontinue to drink from a bottle. Our pediatic dentist just told us s story about a 10 year old who was still using a PACI, and had some kind of deformity of the jaw:scared1: I wonder if she's taken her child to see a dentist? Surely he would have advised her against this.

Is it possible that the little girl was just being goofy? If my kids found a baby bottle in the cabinet, they might ask to drink from it. I can see them thinking that was fun.

Obviously if the kid gets a bottle regularly that is pretty weird.

when i was about 7 my friends and i thought it was cool to drink from baby bottles(dont laugh, we were 7). we carried those bottles every where. luckily i ahd a mom who let me go through my silly little notions as long as i wasnt hurting anyone.

well anyway. i wouldnt worry yourself with what other people are doing. ive always found it quite enough taking care of myself and family.

Not really worried what they do...just curious. I guess I was wondering if this is maybe a cultural thing or a certain part of the country.

I know they take her to the dentist...so who knows.

DD says she always drinks from a bottle in the morning and before bed (she asked her).

It surprises me that it's not been a problem for her drinking from the bottle at that age around other kids.

Sounds creepy to me. It drives me nuts that my nephew, age 2, drinks from a bottle several times a day. We were staying with my sister, and I was horrified that she gave my 5 and 7 year olds sippy cups to drink out of! :sad2:

I'm guessing the child is being goofy... or trying to get Mom's attention (knowing that it irritates Mom to do this). :confused3

My guess is it's a comfort thing, like a blankie. Medically, is it right for her teeth and mouth development? No. Maybe they are going through stressful time with something else, and this is her way of dealing with it. Maybe not. Maybe it is sensory input for her. Is it weird? Yes, to most people, but I don't find it so. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Are you sure it was milk? My DD4 has to use a bottle in order to take her formula (her main source of nutrician). If she uses a cup or a straw, she gags and throws up. The dr agrees that a bottle is better despite the teeth issues. She has so many food allergies that the formula is what keeps her alive-- we have been given the alternative of a feeding tube.

I was not on the defensive, I could just see where this thread was going to go, very few people ever give the parent the benefit of the doubt on situations that they don't agree with. There could be any number of reasons the child does it. But really does it matter what the reason is, I am sure her parents are dealing with the situation in way they see fit.

It just doesn't seem to matter how you parent there will be always someone who disagrees, you do the best you can.

As I said before we don't use bottles, so that isn't the reason I am "siding" with the family.

I am sorry if you don't think I was being friendly or peacful with my comment.

I would have said that maybe she is just playing around.....but you said that your DD said she does it for breakfast and before bed.

I wouldnt worry about it. I have a 4 year old who still loves her pacifier. Some kids just need the security. We've stopped letting her have it any time....now she can have it for bed/nap or if she is sick.

Different strokes for different folks.

My friends and I went through a phase were we thought it was cool to drink out of bottles, except we were in middle school. :confused3  Kids do weird things. Maybe it was just something like that.

Odd, yes...but maybe there is a reason? I know my almost 5 year old son still wears a diaper and drinks from a sippy cup....my 3 year old is potty trained and drinks from a normal cup. If someone just saw my 5 year old, they might wonder if I was a 'bad parent'....and not know of his sensory issues and other adoption/foster related issues that have kept him at this level. I try not to worry about what others think, they don't know the whole story or they wouldn't judge.

Oh and on another strange note, we had a local radio station talk about nursing one morning and this girl calls in and said she last nursed when she was 20!!!!!! She said that her mom weened her at 2, but then she'd still offer her 'ninny' when she was upset or sick to soothe her.....ummmm okay ? It was a wild conversation to say the least.
