Graduation is approaching and I would like some opinions on a gift for my son to give his girlfriend. Background: 8th grade and have been dating for 2 months. They have known each other since 2nd grade. She is a very sweet girl and DH and I adore her.

I was thinking birthstone jewelry - a necklace or earrings.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Something very small. My daughter was not allowed to date in 8th. grade and if a boy gave her something I would have made her give it back. But since you allow him to date something small as many relationships only last for a very short time at that age...

I would recommend Claires...

I wouldn't worry about it now. June is a LONG way off to kids on 8th grade. By this time next week, the whole romance could be long over. And if it isn't, that might make me worry more!! LOL!!

Agreed. Let it get a little closer. They're still young, and relationships don't tend to last long!

Then, yeah, a cute little (non-expensive!) piece of jewelry, like a necklace.

If you do go the jewelry route, especially if you go to Claire's or even Kohl's, Kmart, etc, I would suggest taking the jewelry out of the marked container it comes with and placing it in an unmarked one. (My younger brother is that age and from hearing from his female friends a $7 necklace from Claire's doesn't always reflect well upon you within the peer group - they like to think that they are older than the 13 to 14 years old that they really are.) Another idea would be to put a necklace around a stuffed bear's neck - it masks where the jewelry came from and young girls eat that stuff up.

I totally agree. Wait until the week of graduation..... and shoppingirl, that's a great idea about the stuffed animal. Would be cool if the school's mascot was an animal and you could get one of those.

I love the bear idea. And he will be waiting a bit longer... he has a lot of chores to do to even earn money to buy a present!

:scared1: I have an eighth grader and if he was buying a girl jewelry now I would faint. He doesn't have a girlfriend that comes to the house though. He sure gets text messages from a bunch of them- one in particular. But that's not the one he bought a stuffed animal and candy for her birthday.
I wouldn't do jewelry at 13. Too much pressure.

I have a 15 year old and he went the stuffed animal route for Valentine's Day. I think jewelry implies something more mature than a young teen is ready for.

If they are both "graduating" from 8th grade, I wouldn't think they would be exchanging gifts. I didn't exchange gifts with anyone at my graduations (high school and college). I did receive some gifts from adults, but no one I knew who was graduating gave them to each other.

Build A Bear in a graduation outfit...I've done this for even high school graduations and it is always well received

I would save the jewelry for a birthday or gift giving holiday.

I would suggest a box of Godiva Chocolates as a graduation gift. It comes in a beautiful box, girls love chocolates and it is always well received. It comes in so many sizes and choices that he certainly would find something she would love and fit his budget and most of all it can be bought at anytime.

If things don't work out, no need to bring it back, just eat it!:)

Depending on how much you are looking to spend, you can get her a gift certificate in the amount of $20.08 to mark her graduation year. We routinely give checks or gift certificates in the amount of the graduation year for gifts. Best wishes!

DS is now a Sophomore but when he was graduating 8th grade he got his non-girlfriend/girlfriend a ring! I about died when I heard what he got. :scared1: But he bought a watch ring in her birthstone. She LOVED it. :thumbsup2 It was under $20.00. :teacher: Her parents approved as well and we went to school with them so we know them and are truthful with us.
I would not go for a ring but I piece of jewelry is fine.
For his best guy friends we as a family got them a new wallett and put a small amount of $$ in. One of them was :worship: , was so pleased with it and still talks about it 2 years later.

For several of his friends we took the class/group picture of their 8th grade trip and made them into mousepads. I know for a fact that they are used :surfweb:

Oopss, back on track. A piece of jewelry is fine but I also agree that it is still a long ways a way;) :hourglass
