I know this is a bit off topic, but before I hit DLP in May, I'm stopping in Rome for 3 days/nights. I figured someone perhaps in this well-travelled group may have some recommendations!

I'm not interested in Vatican City- so other than, can anyone recommend which section of the city or a particular hotel to stay in?

I'm interested in seeing the standard "ruins" :teeth:

Any hints or tips will be more than appreciated. Thanks so much for your time!

Giving this a "bump" Jan. Hopefully someone will be able to help :)

I stayed in Hotel Alpi in October 2005 & found it great - very clean, loads of food for breakfast, walking distance to everything. It is in the termini area, a 5 min walk to termini station. There is also a SPAR around the corner where you can stock up on bottled water, etc. There is a fridge in the room for the minibar which has plenty of extra room for your groceries. I paid 165 euro a night for a room with balcony & jacuzzi bath which was great after a day walking. However, my brother stayed there a few weeks ago & he said his jacuzzi bath leaked & tripped the electricity! We were able to walk to all the main tourist areas (except the Vatican where we went on the underground) from our hotel. There are also restaurants along the streets around which are much cheaper than in the more touristy areas.

If you have any questions, let me know & have a great time - Rome is beautiful.

Check out tripadvisor website for reviews on the hotel.

We have stayed at Tourist House (Cavour, near Termini). It's clean, cheap and in the middle of everything (Coliseum, Starion Historic Centre). It's a B&B but in reality, it´s like a little hotel.
Bye!

Thanks so much to both of you! Very helpful information!

Our travel agent is saying that we do not need to reserve a room in Rome and is actually recommending against it because (quote) "reservations always get messed up anyway" - I found that to be very odd!

Merci!

Hi Jan,
I stayed at Hotel Canada near termini for 5days last year. beautiful hotel with lots of original features.huge room and nice breakfast. near underground which was very easy.Price good for the area through expedia.
Wherever you stay, Rome is fantastic, loved my first visit and would love to go back.
Have a lovely time.

Ann

I don't have any information about hotels, but if you want to know anything else, about monuments, food, etc., here I am! Feel free to send me a pm.
ciao

I don't want to contradict anyone, but staying near the termini has ups and downs. Its cheaper land values so that you can get lots more for your money, but its not the greatest area. Its a bit far from many of the sites especially the "ruins". On the plus side its close to all sorts of transportation as all the busses sit here as well as the subways. Back to the negative, (and i've stayed here a lot because of great deals) the cafes are a little run down and I was always afraid to eat in the area (my own prejudice). back to the plus, its easiest to travel to the airport because you can just grab a train. I would check tripadvisor and then compare what you can get for the money in each location. I feel the historic center which is the area you want to be is slightly restricted in hotels because the buildings are so old and they can't build. There are other lovely areas up by the villa borghesee or near the spanish steps but its really a matter of preference. The rome forum at trip advisor is espesially good although I just read a post with everyone contradicting each other about where to stay because its such a personal dicision...good luck.
