?OT...Girl Scout Thin Mints, different?

Quick question about this years cookies.
I got 2 boxes of thin mints delivered today and they quickly went straight to their spot in the freezer.
I went to try one tonight and was surprised to see the foil sleeve instead of the clear one, then noticed they have a light brownish mottled look to the top of them (almost like freezer burn, but they've only been in a few hours) and they taste different.
Not as minty and not as crisp and crunchy as previous years.
Anybody else notice a difference in their cookies this year?

I know they are made by different bakers in different parts of the country so ours are probably different than yours. Having said that, I have noticed that the quality has been going down for the last several years.

Just not the same anymore.
We always buy 10 boxes to keep all year and they usually don't make it 3 months well we are still on the 1st box.

I love them straight out of the freezer too.

The color change you describe sounds like what you're describing is the cocoa butter seperating. I used to work at a place that sold chocolates and it would happen on some of the batches. It doesn't effect the taste or safety of the chocolate, it just means it wasn't heated as consistantly as it could have been. It's basically just not as pretty

I haven't bought Girl Scout cookies in years, so I'm not sure I'd taste the difference if I were to have some now, but I had read stories about how they'd recently changed baking companies.

Girl Scout cookies are now trans-fat free. It is not supposed to affect the taste, but I suppose it could affect the texture, appearance and freezing quality.

Mine were fine, have gone through 5 boxes now ! LOL They are in a clear sleeve and taste the same. Thin Mints+Freezer=YUMMY!!!!!!!!

I have for years noticed how the Girl Scout thin mints did not taste as good as they use to when I was growing up.

Several years ago, I tried Keebler Grasshoppers! Low and Behold --- They are the great thin mints I remember! The best part is you can get them year round for about 2.50 a box. Sometimes, I even have a coupon to use when I buy them. No more stocking up!

Just so you all know, since I am not buying Thin mints, I buy other types of cookies from the Girl Scouts. Either that or I donate the money that I would have spent to the directly to the Girl Scouts.

My Thin Mints were the same as they have been for the past number of years. We have gotten our cookies in silver sleeves for the past 5 years or so - no clear ones on the thin mints for quite a while.

By the way, I also freeze, but they never seem to make it that long.

Girl Scout Cookie Mom here. You probably got a different baker. There are two bakers in the US allowed to bake girl scout cookies. We used the other one from the one we have been this year and I noticed the exact same difference in the thin mints, so that's probably what happened. The way you would tell for sure is what were the names of the other cookies...

if Peanut Butter Patties are now called Tagalongs
if Carmel Delites are now called Samoas
if Shortbreads are now called Trefoils

then you switched bakers too.

Thin mints from the freezer are my weakness as well. I had a few yesterday and they did taste different. Not as sweet with an oily aftertaste. I'm not sure if I can really stomach any more of them. I had some Samoas the night before and they tasted fine. My DS12 who also loves thin mints couldn't taste any difference.

The cookies, in a clear sleeve, looked exactly the same with no mottled appearance (although I have seen that in the past). They just tasted different to me. I shouldn't eat them anyway--I'm too chubby!

I ordered some GS cookies, but have yet to recieve them.... just wanted to comment that Tagalongs, Samonas and Trefoils... they have been called those names around here for as long as I can remember! I never knew there were 2 different bakers. Hopefully our thin mints will be good still!

The year we did girl scout cookies the thin mint had a thin white layer of mint between the cookie and the chocolate. And that was the year Samoas got a hole. This year no foil pack and no white. Just chocolate and cookie.

Girl Scouts are having a tough cookie season! They have a new baker and unfortunately, your complaint has been common. In our area there have been hundreds of people asking for replacents. What a pain...

yep, we are using the different baker this year. No more Tagalongs and Samoas. Now we have the Peanut Butter Patties and Carmel Delites. It really had people doing a double take this year.

If you like GS Thin Mints, try this recipe.

Take a box of Andes mints and melt them ( I use the microwave).

Dip regulare vanilla wafers (I used Aldi) into the chocolate.

Place on a cookie sheet to harden.

They taste just like the GS Thin Mints that I sold MANY years ago. (ours were from Burry Bakery)

There are 2 bakers that bake GS cookies. Little Brownie bakers and ABC bakers. We have always had LBB and the thin mints were always packaged in a clear sleeve. It is probably the case that your area council uses ABC bakers. There have been some regions who have switched this year so the cookies do look different and have different names from previous years.
I'm pretty sure they were made without transfat last year, we did notice a difference in some but not all cookies.
As far as GS cookies really having a hard time, it may be a regional thing. My Jr. GS troop sold more this year than any previous year. I have heard people comment that the quality has gone down, and price has gone up but they still buy because they know it does go to a great cause.
We get our orders in next week. Thin mints were our top seller, I am anxious to see what everyone has to say about them this year.

I am so glad that I am not the only one who noticed the difference! I thought I was coming down with something because the taste was so different. Last night, I ate the original style peanut butter cookies and they tasted stale! What is the world coming to? lol I WANT MY ORIGINAL GIRL SCOUT COOKIES BACK!!!!! and yes, I am yelling!

Our area in New Jersey changed bakers and we could all tell the difference in the thin mints and Tagalongs. We now have the Peanut Butter Patties, which have much less peanut butter than the Tagalongs. I hope they change bakers again next year. On the positive side, I haven't been tempted to buy any extra boxes of Tagalongs like I normally do!

We're just wrapping up our cookie sales in SW Washington and the Thin Mints come from LBB -- they're exactly the same as they've always been and we haven't had any complaints. Still the top seller for our troop.

We switched from Little Brownie to ABC this year as well. The cookies aren't the same, but close. There are differences and I prefer the Little Brownie better but it wasn't my choice. LB went Transfat free last year and some people complained, but they didn't buy because of the transfat! Our councils combined with others to make "Western Ohio" and the whole cookie sale this year is not going nearly as smooth, from the long lines to pick up the cookies to the cookie cupboards! My girls aren't even trying that hard because the prizes are bad. There is no "750 Club" and no prizes after 1000 up to 2000 (which is a Wii)! We've had 4 booth sales and so far this years sale is better than the last six years! Fingers crossed...I still have a garage full of cookies.
