Shopping and sunbathing are my tow favourtie activites so for me there's plenty. But you can do jeep tours out into the desert and camel rides and stuff too.
Stay on Jumeirah beach. As if you stay in an actual city hotel and want to go to the beach you'd have to use a public one which apparently can have a lot of hagglers and stuff on. But all the hotels on Jumeirah have private beaches so there are no problems there.
My absolute favourite hotel is Al Qasr, which is a part of a big complex that has another hotel, Mina a salaam, next to it and a lot of villas called dar el masyaf with it aswell as a huge lovely market (souq) which I loved.
(I'm scared of real markets in places like marrakech and stuff but this one is awesome, it's a 6* hotel so the market is really funny, they try and make it seem markety but it has starbucks and prada and stuff - hee.)
Also it's right next to the burj al arab (Big famous sail hotel) and there's free boats back and forth to it, and you get free entry to the wild wadi water park next door.
I've heard the Jumeirah beach hotel which is the other side of the burj is great too.
But I would always tell people al Qasr!!!!
Thanks for that, I don't have a clue about Dubai! Yes I was just looking at the Jumeirah trip advisor people rank it very highly!
I don't like "real" markets either, and sellers on beaches really get on my nerves!
