Last night I was watching an episode of the Ellen show which I had tivoed and Paula Deen was the guest. They made fudge with Velveeta. Sounds gross but Ellen loved it and apparently Paula and Cat Cora had made this during an Iron Chef competition.

Has anyone tried this? Can you taste the cheese in it??

Here's the link for the recipe

I have had some before and it is really creamy. It depends on how they make it, I have had it where you could almost taste it, or it tasted off not fudgy. But other times, you would have not way to know it had velvetta in it. It is not a dry fudge. My grandmother has a recipe that some old candy company used to make it that way

No - I haven'tmade it or tried it (that I know of!!) but I saw Paula Dean make this on Ellen and it sounded AWFUL. I thought it was a joke at first (because it was on Ellen after all!). So I'm also curious :)

It must be a southern thing....probably a south Georgia thing...LOL but Velveeta makes the best fudge. It keeps it from being gritty, like most fudge tends to be...it just melts in your mouth. You have to have the right recipe though, or it can taste cheesy. Makes sense if you look at the actual ingredients in Velveeta- the first 3 ingredients are milk, water, and milkfat.

I am going to try and make the "fudge ball lollipops" like Paula made on the show...they looked really good!

Does anyone know if the iron chef episode with her and Cat Cora has aired yet?

oh man I make this every christmas and it's YUMMY... it's very different from regular fudge and you either like it or not. There doesn't seem to be much in between.

Oh for gosh sakes.

I have never heard of, or would be willing to partake of this "southern dish" and have lived my whole life in the south. I think Paula Dean needs to take another vacation overseas in order to spare me/us of another one of her inventions.

My sil made this one year and made me taste it. It was ok. I'll never make it. I much prefer my fudge made with marshmellows or marshmellow creme!

I Saw the Iron Chef episode it sounded really bad but all of the judges liked it

Chocolate and Cheese *shivers*

Chocolate and cheese? :crazy2: But I have never tasted, so I can't really judge. However, I was born and raised in the south and have never heard of this, and believe me.... my momma made some crazy Southern dishes, too.

I think I'm gonna make it tomorrow. I'll let you know how it turns out.:)

It's delicious, the first fudge I make at Christmas :) It's really smooth and creamy and no one has ever guessed that it has cheese in it. My recipe doesn't call for a TON of cheese though LOL

1/4 lb of Velveeta brand cheese
1 stick of margarine
1 box (approx. 4 cups) of Powdered Sugar
1/4 cup of Cocoa
1 1/2 txp Vanilla Extract
1 cup of Nuts (optional)

In a large saucepan, on low heat, melt cheese and butter together. Sift together Powdered sugar and cocoa. Slowly mix powdered sugar/cocoa in to the cheese and butter mixture and add your nuts. Take off heat and press in to buttered pan (9x13 if you like your fudge thin, loaf pan if you like it thick).

I also sift my powdered sugar and cocoa as I'm adding it to the butter mixture, it seems to not form any lumps this way.

As Rhiansmom said though, either you like it or you don't :) There are so many fudge recipes out there...something for everyone :)

Where's the barfing emoticon?!

I agree!

I can understand a CREAM cheese fudge because I love chocolate cheesecake, but Velvetta?!?

You guys realize that you don't even TASTE the cheese, right?? It's only purpose is to improve the texture.

Yeah, I guess not everyone has a culinary mind, though, right? Not that I think Velveeta is a culinary treasure. :lmao:

If people really wanted to wretch, those of us "in the know" could start posting about what's in all the burgers and milkshakes people love so much! :rotfl:

My great-grandma gave me the recipe at least 10 yrs ago, it sounds repulsive but its strangely good. Like someone else said, I think it depends on the recipe, Ive had nasty versions too!

My grandmother used to make this every year. It makes a ton of fudge, and it is the best stuff I have ever tasted. If you didn't tell anyone it had cheese in it, no one would ever guess. Trust me, it's yummy. I guess it's from the south because Grandma was from North Carolina.
