I'm curious about something. When you buy a gift card for a store (Target, for example) and you use the gc in a different (Target), which store gets credit for the sale? The one that sold the gc or the one where the gc was redeemed?

Hello
I am currently an office manager in a retail store, it works two ways, first the store who sold you the gift card gets the sale for you purchasing the gift card, then the store where you purchase items from using the gift card, gets the credit, so either way both stores made the sale.

Hope that helps you out.

I use to be a manager for Gap and heres how it worked for us....
If our store sold the Gift card, the amount th GC was worth would go towards our totals for the day.

Say the gift card is worth $100, when the card is used, the store, (no matter if it was the same store it was purchased at) will not get credit for a $100 sale. You see, the merchandise was initially already paid for when the giver of the card purchased it at the first store. The second store can not profit again from it. HTH

I work at Home Depot and the store which sells the gift card gets credit for selling the gift card but doesn't get credit for sale. Only the store which sells the merchandise gets credit for the sale.

I used to work at Macy's and Dillard's...the store you sold the item gets the credit.

The company that I work for works like this:

By selling a gift card, it is strictly revenue, dollars in the till. No sale is credited to anyone.

Then, when the gift card is redeemed for product, the store that sold the product gets full credit for that sale.

We have a fully commissioned sales staff, and a gift card sale is actually very very quick, so they are not compensated for that.

I work for both TDS and FranklinCovey.

At TDS, both the store that sells the GC and the store that redeems the GC get credit for a sale.

At FranklinCovey, while revenue is counted towards the store, it's exactly as Debbie described. It's strictly dollars in the till and no one gets credit when the store sells the GC. However, when a store redeems a GC, they get full credit for that sale.
