Need your thoughts/opinions/advice.

Will a school hire a prospective teacher if the state certification/license is not yet issued, but the teacher has a degree and valid certification in another state?

There is a position open for the 09-10 school year that I would like to apply and interview for in the next few weeks while in the area when looking for a place to live. My certification was just reinstated for transfer, but I can't get my CPR certification for the new license until I am there in a few weeks, then I will be able to submit my complete application. I could submit what I have, but was told it could go quicker if everything was submitted at one time. I will be moving in May or June, but would like to jump on the spring hiring and having a position would make moving easier with one less thing to stress about.

TIA!!!:goodvibes

I know that is Alabama they hill hire you as long as the certificate form another state is valid for transfer into alabama.

Yes, I believe that they would, but it probably depends on the district. You are a licensed teacher, as long as your current certification is valid for transfer in the new state. Some districts hire teachers on waivers who have never been licensed, so you should be okay. Again, depending on the district

Cool thanks for the immediate answers! Knew I could count on DIS buddies :)

Valid special education (ESE) certification is in FL and I am moving to IN.

From what I know (friends in who have moved to work in several states and countries) and my knowledge of our school system in MN, I would agree that YES, you SHOULD be fine. I would be upfront in an interview that you are licensed and any experience you have and then explain the situation. I know in some states you will need to complete certian classes or tests within the first 1-2 years, but usually the initial transfer is not the problem. HTH. Good luck!

Yes, I do have on my resume that the IN license is pending (well, it will be at that time). All I need is 1 year and can complete anything they need me to do. Right now it is kind of difficult doing things from overseas, so being in the US will make thing easier. I've been out of the classroom for about 6 years, but still have the drive to teach those that learn in unconvential ways.

I know in my district, they would hire someone. My license had expired and they hired me knowing that and actually helped me get it reinstated. Good luck to you!!

My school (charter) would. They hired me without it (I was working in a private school so hadnt applied but was eligible) and we've hired teachers who had it in states with reciprocity before they got it in our state.

In my district, they will hire you as long as the certification is from a state that has some kind of certification agreement with my state. I'm in NY and I know we have some kind of agreement with VT so someone with a VT certification would be considered for a job in my district. But, I know of someone from TN who tried to get a job in my district, but couldn't get hired b/c her certification wasn't from a state with that certification agreement. I guess it all depends on the district. Good luck! I see that you have a special ed cert.- that's what I teach too. There are always so many special ed openings all over, you shouldn't have a hard time getting a position. :goodvibes

I was able to do this and actually worked about a month before license from the new state was finalized. Just needed to show proof of licensure in the home state. My license was temporary and needed to fulfill some coursework requirements for a perm license but it did allow me to work. Good luck!

This is actually something I don't understand. With inclusion being the forefront of LRE, I would think that there would be fewer positions.:confused3 My first love is the other end of LRE in the low functioning moderate to severe/profound abilities with physical disabilities/OHI. My first year out I worked in a sp ed school and LOVED it...there was never a fight for what we needed, the kids were never looked down upon by typical children that didn't understand, and all services were provided at the school with the therapists housed out of our building. Then I moved to an ESE class in a typical middle school...everything was a fight, $$, materials, services (and contacting therapists), and getting the ESE kids to be advocated for themselves while teaching typical students to respect differences. At this point I will take anything to get my foot in the door and do my best to educate any children I have in my class to reach and bypass their goals.

Thanks everyone...I am feeling very encouraged!!!

Wife was a special ed. teacher. When we moved to Ohio she was immediately hired, with the stipulation that she would complete whatever was needed to get her license here. I don't remember what it was, but I remember it required some work and a few hundred dollars. Good luck!

It always does :sad2:

I got reinstated in FL as of Friday (well the certificate showed up :woohoo:) and I called about 2 positions in the Special Ed Co-op and was told to go ahead and apply...WOO HOO:banana:

Thanks everyone, I am starting to feel better about all this. And DH told me he was moving with or without me :lmao: so I guess we are for sure moving.:cool1:
