Fireworks ban (Dare County, Outer Banks)
As of June 1, all fireworks are banned in Dare County, which includes Hatteras Island and most of the Outer Banks. The ban was prompted in December, when bottle rockets started a wind-whipped brush fire that nearly claimed a home in Kill Devil Hills.
Outer Banks police and fire officials have long warned about the dangers of fireworks on the barrier islands, where most of the homes are wooden, said Dare County spokeswoman Dorothy Toolan. "There was a lot of public support for the ban."
Southern Shores and Duck also have banned fireworks. The Nags Head Town Council voted 3-2 against a ban, though council members pointed out that North Carolina state law already prohibits most fireworks.
Farther south, Ocracoke Island banned fireworks in 2002 after a large brush fire came uncomfortably close to the town.
