OT: False Negative Pregnancy Test?

Okay, here is my strange question. Has anyone ever had a false negative pregnancy test? I have taken 4 tests, that all came back negative. The timing of "possible" conception was August 1. I took the last test today. I am still nursing my DS (15 months), but only at night. I have not had a period since he was born. The strange thing is that I have been hungry ALL the time for the past week for so and I am just generally feeling emotional about everything. Even my DH thinks something is up. When I got pregnant with my DS, I was also super cranky and emotional, so now I just don't know what to think. I was thinking it could be PMS, but I just don't know at this point. Any thoughts??

I have had negative tests that turned into positives. With my first, the hpts were neg, but the blood test was pos. From what I understand, the hormone levels are quite low in the beginning, so don't always show up on hpts.

Yup, with my first three pg's I didn't get a positive at home right away. False negatives are much more common than false positives. For the first one I finally went to the Dr. for a blood test since if I wasn't pg, I figured something else had to be wrong! I found I never got a positive by putting the test in the urine stream. I had to use a cup and do it that way, which I didn't figure out until pg #4. I guess I just don't have the "stream technique" down! It could just be your hormones dealing with getting your cycles back after nursing though. A blood test at the dr. will tell for sure.

I had several tests that were negative. Have you been taking them in the morning, first pee of the day? That is when I finally got a positive. The others were taken at random times of the day so maybe try that if you haven't already...good luck

False negatives are common. I took 3 pregnancy tests in the fall of 1996-all negative. I got really sick and went into the hospital. I refused pain meds until they did a blood test, just to be sure (was 2 weeks late at this point). I never did get my meds, and ds is 11!

I have had false positives on HPT's. I would go to your doctor and get a blood draw.

Good Luck!

Ive had false negatives and 1 false positive before. False positives are a lot more unheard though. I would ask for a blood test. They are not that expensive really if you consider how much you might spend on multiple home tests. Plus it drove me crazy when I got negatives when I was pretty sure I was pregnant. Hormone imbalances can mimick pregnancy too. I hope whatever you wish for comes true:goodvibes

My sister was trying for a long time and finally got a positive at home. When she went to the doctors the test came back negative. She was so upset. I talked to my friend and she said that you can't get a false positive only false negatives. She went back to the doctors a few days later and again it was negative. I told her to request a blood test as that is what my friend told me. She waited a few more days and then went back and asked for a blood test. It finally came back positive.

You do need to do a home test first thing in the morning.

With DS#2, I couldn't get a positive to save my life. I was about 3 weeks late when my OBGYN confirmed what I knew, I was pregnant. False negatives are common. False positives can happen, but are rare. Often times, a false positive is more of a sign of an "incomplete" pregnancy--fertilization happens, but not implantation. Not quite a miscarriage. Unfortunately, I have some experience with that too.

WOW! How nice to not have to deal with a period for so long. As far as the preggers test goes, try again in a few days. If it's still negative see your OB/GYN. Is it normal to not have a period for so long after delivering? I know mine varied on how much and for how long I nursed. But 15 months may be something to be concerned about.

I took a pregnancy test about the time I was due to start my period although I knew I was pregnant (I had never ever felt that way before - I was exhausted and my breasts ached something fierce and had already started to enlarge). It came back negative. I went to have a blood draw and they confirmed that I was pregnant. I got another false negative about 3 weeks later and it wasn't until I was almost out of my 1st trimester that I got a positive.

I agree with all the other posters - go have a blood test done. That's the only definitive answer you'll get.

It could be a pregnancy, but it could also be PMS. The symptoms are maddeningly the same. And I hear the symptoms approaching your first postpartum period, after a long time, can be brutal.

Lactational amenorrhea is totally normal. Doesn't always happen; I got my cycles back at 4 months (after 3 dang months of lochia, I couldn't catch a break) and I'm not sure that any baby nursed more than my son, LOL. But there are many women who don't have any periods while nursing, and if they nurse for extended periods of time (or normal amounts of time in quite a bit of the rest of the world) then that means a long time without periods. Lucky ducks!

OP, I hope you get the answer you want!

Totally normal and varies with the individual. I have gotten AF back as early as 9 months after birth and as late as 22 months.

When I became pregnant with my oldest DS, it took forever to get a positive test. Sometimes implantation is delayed for whatever reason.

You might want to look at peeonastick.com for the most sensitive home tests, needs the least hcg, or perhaps try a digital test. I highly recommend the Dollar Tree tests as they are quite sensitive ... I just got a positive with one today at 9 DPO (too early really *** too much can happen ...) I hope it goes the way you want.

Yes everyone of my false test were neg. It is not a known for a false positive, but yes to false neg. That could be because of your nursing too perhaps.

I would get a blood test to clear your mind.I had a false neg two weeks before my foot surgery and then found out 10 days post op I was pregnant at the time, DD was born fine....gifted, socially challanged everywhere but home.

That is the way my gg ended up with 10, nursing and no period :upsidedow

Oh yeah I have!! I had two false negatives when I was actually pregnant. It is actually very common. False positives are much more rare. I just KNEW I was pregnant, even without having any symptoms and the two negatives. And I was right. I waited about a week longer and it was a big fat POSITIVE!

And my DD turns 1 today! princess:

My negatives were negatives and positives positives... guess I was lucky.:thumbsup2

To me, it sounds like hormones that are still out of wack since you are still nursing... could also be a little post-partum depression going on (I had that - the moodiness makes me wonder). I would go see the doctor and explain all your symptoms... it could be nothing but if it is something its good to have it looked at.;)

My first period after my pregnancy was like that - felt like pregnancy, scared us since we already had two kids a year apart in age and that's all we wanted - three in three years would have been too much.

Thank you all SO MUCH for your replies. I am thinking that I am just having a raging case of PMS! :) We are not planning on having more kids, but if we were pregnant, it would still be a blessing! My sister has some extra pregnancy tests, to I think I am going to talk her into bringing me a couple, just in case! I know this sounds nuts, but my DH keeps saying stuff about it and when he did that in the past, he was always right. :cutie: So, I guess we shall see!

Most likely, if you conceived on Aug 1st, a pg test should be positive by 20 days past ovulation. However, is there any chance you conceived a week later? That would give you the possibility of still not having enough hormone 13 or 14 days past ovulation to get a negative test. I hope it turns out the way you want it to!

With ds I had a false negative from the doctor's office! Good thing I was pretty sure I was right. I had a false negative with "First Response" with the same pregnancy. But the El Cheapo Walmart "Equate" brand test was positive. In the case of pregnancy tests, more expensive does not mean better! The tests are for HCG hormone. If you don't have enough hormone yet, it could come up negative. If you haven't already retested, test again in a day or two using your first pee in the morning. Good luck.
