My mom was watching the news a few minutes ago and they were talking about a pipe bomb explosion that went off in the DTD parking lot at about midnight last night. They didn't get into much detail, but it looks like there were no injuries, thank goodness. So everyone in the area be careful!! :grouphug:

Didn't this happen a few months ago?? But it was a fire/explosion by DisneyQuest that turned out to be some paving/construction equipment on fire?? Or was I dreaming that?

Off to see what the Orlando Sentinel is saying this morning....:surfweb:

ETA: Local 6 is reporting that it was a "suspicious incident" with a garbage can, that the sheriffs are investigating, but that no one is injured.

it reminded me of the DisneyQuest incident as well.

All I have to say is there better not be freakin terorist messing with Walt Disney World:(...I will go crazy.

thank God nobody got hurt

From the Chicago Tribune at 11:30 this morning:

Orange County deputies found a "low-level crude device" resembling a pipe bomb in a trash can at a Downtown Disney parking lot early today.

"Our investigators found end caps, which usually indicate a pipe-bomb-like device," said Orange County Sheriff Kevin Beary at a news conference this morning. "We believe this was not designed to cause significant property damage or injuries."

In an earlier version of this story, Sheriff Beary incorrectly reported that the homemade device blew the doors off a dumpster in the popular tourist spot at Walt Disney World. No doors were blown off and the receptacle was a trash can, said Orange County spokesman Capt. Mark Strobridge.

Beary said security has been increased county-wide not just because of the suspicious incident, but also because of the recent terrorist activity overseas.

"Once we saw things unfolding in the U.K. and Glasgow, and the fact that it's July 4th, we increased security," said Beary.

He added that "this is not connected to any sophisticated [terrorist] plot, either domestically or internationally."

A Disney security officer on bike patrol called deputies at about 12:30 a.m. he heard a noise and saw white smoke coming from a garbage can in a back lot at of Downtown Disney, said Disney spokeswoman Kim Prunty.

The garbage can is in the far lot behind the Cirque du Soleil theater, going toward the golf course at the Saratoga Springs Resort, Prunty said. There are no attractions or shops in that area.

When deputies arrived, they secured the area and later reported no damage or injuries.

"The only damage was to the garbage can," Prunty said.

Downtown Disney is a popular spot frequented by tourists and locals for its shopping and entertainment, but last week, some of its security policies came under fire.

Walt Disney World ejected four of Florida State University's top football prospects - including the son of a Disney manager and the son of a Philadelphia civil-rights lawyer - from Downtown Disney under its anti-gang, no-loitering policy and banned them from entering the theme parks for life.

After Disney officials were questioned about security and the use of racial profiling to target and drive out minority youth, they decided to revise the trespass warnings so that the four are banned only from Downtown Disney for one year.

Good, so it wasn't an actual bomb. I was worried about terrorists, too! DBF said he's always concerned with how easy it is to get into the DTD area, that something like that could happen. :scared1: Well at least that wasn't the case this time!

thanks for posting that info tink...DF and I have been curious about the incident

They've been having issues with DTD recently. When we went out to dinner at the HOB in December, we were approached by a guy in the parking lot, who offered to sell us drugs! :scared1: Not very Disney... When I reported it to DTD management, they kind of blew me off, saying that they have good security. Yeah, so good that dealers are setting up shop in your parking lot... And now, as the Sentinel article mentioned, they've been targeting African American teenagers who are "loitering." Good grief!

Cheers!

DTD attracts some really weird people. We were there a few years ago near closing and there was this really weird guy following us around. I've always been more apprehensive about being there since then...

DF and I are at DTD regularely and rarely go to West Side (unless going to Cirque). We stick to the Marketplace (not that either end is safer than the other...but no "clubs" or bars at Marketplace). And when we do go to PI we only go to the comedy club and 8-trax, then take a boat or bus back to our resort. We've managed to avoid any "wierdos" this way. And we only park there during the day, I have a fear of walking back to our car at night after the hoax last month.

On a side note, how is the comedy club? DF and I don't go to PI hardly ever for the same reasons. It just gets very 'weird' at night, however, we'd like to try the comedy club during our honeymoon next week!

Why would any ever want to do anything like that at Disney--or anywhere for that matter. But Disney? The happiest place on earth!! Grrrrr... some people!

We love it! Its different everytime since its improv. On a busy night we line up about 20-30 min pre-show. (They have 5 shows a night) On a less busy night we line up about 5-10 min before the show. All depends on if you want to sit right infront of the stage or up in the stands. Be careful though...even sitting up in the stands you can get picked on! LoL. It is so much fun though...we have never been where we weren't cracking up. :rotfl2: I definately suggest giving it a try! Oh...and get popcorn! They have the best! (Other than Jellyrolls of course..my FAVE place).
