To give you the full exposition, my best friend is moving to Lancashire (that's the cold wet bit on the way to Scotland, the bit with Liverpool in - where the Beatles come from ;-) ) and she wants us to go and stay in the summer. She gave me her new address and told me to punch it into Google Earth to see how nice and rural it is round there. So I punched it in and it took me straight to her new street. Then I punched in my addy and it took me there. So then I tried a couple of yours and it took me there too! :scared:

I will say for my house it didn't centre on the right number (DS(8) thinks - I wasn't sure), but still, the thought that anyone with your address can literally find out where you live, see what car you have outside etc I find a bit scary! Or am I just a worry-wort?

It is creepy. And I'm really not very fond of that feature at all. I think I read where you can some out "opt out" of that, but I don't remember how.

It is creepy, but someone can get directions to your house on Mapquest quite easily if they have your address. And, I believe the pictures on Google Earth aren't current. They could be months/years old. I may be wrong, but that's what DH told me.

I actually used it in a CJ for where we summer vaca...took me right to the house, and the marina....it made for a great pic, but it wasn't current.

Its creepy but not very current. It shows my moms house as the only one on her street and her neighbors built their house over 3 years ago (more than that I think). Still I don't like the thought people can see exactly what house we live in.

It is a little creepy. The last time I looked up our address, at least it had the previous owner's car in the driveway.

For my house it is more current - sort of. It used to use the actually house as the pinpoint, but now it has the state owned property next door as our address. The picture is updated though, but it was done over the summer and the driveway is completely hidden by leaves. Our young orchard that we added last spring is on the map though!

Last time I looked up my house it was still under construction on Google Earth- of course we have been living in it for 2.5 years now.

ok so that was funny, All you see is trees! It's a pretty current pic, within the last year, because the house across the street put a building on the big dirt pile. and I see DH's Jetta next to the house.
I have to say though, you would have to really know what you are looking at to figure it all out. On our old house in Georgia couldn't be zoomed in as much as this house and they were about a block and a half off. I had to hunt for the house.

I think the mapquest directions are scarier, since it's door to door.

yes sort of disturbing, but use programs like that all the time for work... and no i am not a private investigator lol...

the images can vary greatly in their dates....depends on where you live, when the satelite flew over etc. most people don't even know images like these exist but i am ure the creepy people know where to find them

I have a GPS unit for my car because of the type of work I do, and when I get close to my neighborhood it thinks my house is my neighbors house that is 3 houses down the street on the opposite side of the street! So if it follows that satellite, it may not always be looking at the right address. I would assume it's in one of the 2 satellites that guide all the GPS units?

And, nothing would surprise me now days!

I just checked mine out and it was when the previous people lived here. It was showing the house 3 houses down from me and it was covered by the trees.

I know mine is years old. My mom's car is out front and she died almost four years ago. My neighbor's house still shows their pool and that has been gone many years. Also the cars out front could have been visiting for all anyone knows.

It's not terribly accurate. Mine brought me to a tree. Not a tree in front of a house, just a tree. Speaking of which, it's clearly not real time as all the real trees are green and they are certainly not that now! It's also too blurry when you get down to street level to really make out anything unless you know what you're looking for.

Still creepy though - for example, I could see someone's shiny red pick-up very clearly!

But I suppose if someone's coming looking a map and the electoral roll are all they need!

I really need to get out more :rotfl:
