OT: Do Mead Trapper Keepers still exist?

My DD10 was told to get a 3" capacity Trapper Keeper for next school year - they don't seem to exist anymore! I remember them from the 1980's - anyone here in a similar situation and what did you do? Teacher cannot be contacted until September. I googled the name and it comes up as "vintage" under ebay listings!!!

If you go to target and look around you will find some that are very similar, i dont think they are called that anymore in the supplies section at target but i have seen them, also they now have biger ones made of cloth like material, i bought a couple last year so i knwo they are there, just make sure you shop early, they are uysually hidden with the binders.

Funny... in the 11 years that I've had kids in school they've always said NO Trapper Keepers allowed!!

Not sure if they call them that anymore but you will find something similar out there....

Yeah Trapper Keepers are gone but if they said 3 inches, they probably mean a 3 in. ring binder.

Here in Ohio they still exist, but all of our teachers always say no Trapper Keepers too. I have normally found them at KMart, Rite Aid, etc. I know there are other ones out there that are similiar as well. Perhaps they are not as plentiful since all of the stores haven't geared up for back to school shopping. I know our local WalMart told somene near me to check back for more school supplies and clothes the 3rd week of July.

I went to the Mead.com website, as they were the original makers of the Trapper Keeper. Searching on Trapper Keeper returns no hits. However, it appears as though they have a new member in the family, the Class Keeper. Here are links to the 2 Class Keeper products offered.

I'm just curious though, why would teachers "ban" Trappers from their class room?

I bet I know what they are talkiing about...I just rummaged through DS's closet His is a Mead binder with a zipper made with a cloth-like material (not really nylon, softer...I don't know what it is called) and says Five Star. It has a zipper that closes it. I don't think they come in bright bold colors, his is olive green and black. We have purchased other binders with zippers in the past, but this is a superior product. The folders are much like the old Trapper Keeper type. But, I highly recommend the Mead plastic bungee folders . They don't tear up. Never do the binder holes tear. The corners have bungee cords that secure the folder from opening. They are a little hard to find, though. So, if you see them, grab them.
My DS has a lot of organization issues. Several educators and private sector professionals have suggested the zipper binder and loved the bungee folders when I showed them.

My son was given special permission to use a Trapper Keeper . The other kids had to use regular three ring binders and set them up the way the teacher ordered with page dividers, etc. They are also a little bulky--I suppose that could be a reason.

A teacher told me once that trapper keepers cause too much distraction. My daughter got distracted by the mirror in hers when she was in 1st or 2nd grade. Her teacher sent it home on the bus with dd one day and requested that I get her a plain 3-ring binder.

I've seen real Trapper Keepers in Target. They are so flimsy now (I don't remember if they were way back when).

DD had a teacher who requested no trapper keepers - said they were too bulky. I'm thinking if you cram the same amount of stuff in a standard 3 ring binder it's gonna be pretty bulky too.


The class keepers look nice. I'll have to keep an eye out for them.

Older DS has used this one and liked it.

On one hand some teachers like them because everything is kept together and organized. On the other hand some parents (me especially ) hate to see them being required. Not only are they heavy but using them means kids are bringing home more stuff than they need. Watch a 80 lb kid carry a full binder, math book, science book and a reading book. By the 2nd trimester we end up pulling everything out of the binder and tossing it in the closet because no teacher wants to admit they are the ones that required it in the first place.

Oh, I still have a red one up on my room filled with lots of lesson plans! They do not sell that relic anymore! The newer version is more like a three inch three ring binder with a cloth zippered material all around it. Some have mesh pockets on the front as well and often they have folders buit into the bookends as well as a place for pens/pencils, CD's and DS's has a spot to hook his CD player in and thread the earphones through as well--we have random checks to be sure he isn't doing that! (Though as a teacher I really love the way they make it easy for kids to circumvent the rules and dont' even get me started about cell phones and text messages )

Maybe they banned them after "Cartman" on South Park had an evil Trapper Keeper that tried to take ove the world !

I think for many "lower grades" they were banned because there isn't enough room in a desk to keep that and all other needed supplies. In the high school they would be fine becasue of lockers, but desk space is very limited in the lower grades. Smaller children also get distracted by the features and dont' get to work as quickly.

I remember my old Trapper Keeper opened up to THREE panels PLUS the fold-over flap. There was no way to open it without unfolding all the sections. It made it very unwieldly.

In high school, we had those small, half-size desks, the ones in which you swivel up the desk & fold it out of the way to sit. Those extra panels of my Trapper Keeper would always hang off the side of the desk. And if I was not holding onto it, it would simply slide off the desk, due to the weight of the sections that hung off. Then all my papers (stuffed in the Keeper) would go flying all over the aisle.

If teachers are thinking of Trapper Keepers being like that, I can see why they'd be banned.

I wanted to let you know that I saw some Nike Trapper Keepers at Office Max. They said Nike-Mead on the ticket so I think they were the realy trapper keepers.
