Hi All ~ We would like to drive to Nova Scotia thru the states. We will drive from Mississauga to Cornwall to visit my family and then into New York, thru Vermont, NS and Maine then ferry to NS.

Here's my question....what paperwork do we need for our dog to cross the boarder? Thanks! Sandra

Don't cross your boarder... be a NICE landlord!:)

But taking the dog across the border... you're supposed to carry proof of rabies vaccination though they rarely ask for it. We always used to get our vet to give us a certificate of vaccination when we took the pooch in for yearlies. The letter details all the vaccinations given, includes a description of the pet (lately our vet uses a digital photo taken by the vet), and the vet's name and license number. A good reason to carry the letter whether you're crossing the border or not is that if you need to kennel the dog anywhere along your trip, most kennels won't take an unknown pet without proof of vaccination including kennel cough/bordetella.

I miss our dog, who went to dog heaven some years back. The cat just doesn't want to travel with us though my daughter has tried to talk her into it.

Sandra:

You're taking the same route we are, although we'll cross at Prescott and head east along the same route. I love the drive on Hwy 2 from Montpelier all the way to Maine.

Northstar is right, you need a letter from your vet showing vaccinations. They'll know exactly what to give you when you ask. When we went camping in the Adirondacks last year, the U.S. Customs Inspector asked about vaccinations, but did not want to see documentation. Canada Customs wanted to see the paperwork when we returned.

A few years ago, we crossed the border from quebec to US and the customs people insisted on taking a picture of our parrot :lmao:

We also had the dog with us and had to show the rabies certificate.

Another thing we had to bring was the bill of sale of the parrot to us, to prove that we weren't smuggling the bird from the states into Canada on our return.

All went well :goodvibes

iluvwesties (aka Carol)

I live in Windsor, ON and have a cottage in Michigan. I cross the border often with my dog and have never had an issue.
When I show my passport, I also show the vaccination card from the vet. When I originally asked my vet, he simply gave me a small wallet-sized card. He said he gave them out all the time.
