OT-Chlorine bleach

Those are not very nice parents he's got there. My mom realized pretty early on that a lawn was not something she was ever going to to cultivate. Did it to protect me. And b/c lawns are huge environmental sucks of time and energy, of course, so I'm not sure she was upset. Of course, I figured out way later that it's generally the chemicals used on large expanses of grass that gets me, not a patch of grass. But I still don't like overwhelming myself, and if my mom had decided to grow a lawn despite my body's insistence that it's not good for me, I would have been questioning how much my mom actually liked me!

What a horrible thing to say. I;m allergic to cut grass. I have a beautiful lawn. My husband cuts the grass and when he can't I do. I simply go inside and take Benedryl. Of course, I'm sure you've had some type of life threatening reaction to that as well.

Chlorine = Cl
Sodium Hypoclorite (Clorox/Purex) = NaOCl

The chemistry is different. Simple as that.

You can't say that oxygen is oxygen.

oxygen = O2
carbon dioxide = CO2

Chemistry.

I do not disagree with you over the potential environmental dangers of chlorine. I do disagree with you about the chemical composition of Clorox.

Edit: Just like oxygen and carbon dioxide both have oxygen in their chemical formulas, they are very different. So, just like chlorine and Clorox both have chlorine in their chemical formulas, they are very different. Which is what I was trying to say when I said there is no chlorine in Clorox. Clorox has a degradation pathway that does not result in chlorine plus something else, it results in salt and water. And that's what I meant when I said there is no chlorine in Clorox.

There you go being all reasonable and scientific. It's much more fun to to overreact and quote psuedo-science. :rotfl:

Codeine is a really strong drug.

I admit I did have reaction the first time I took benedryl. I'm sure it had NOTHING to do with the strong frozen margarita I had at the same time.

(lesson learned...that's one drug you should heed to no alcohol warning with...I slept all afternoon).

Oh goodness. My son had a similar reaction to tylenol with codeine. He was a huge PITA for a few hours, but we muddled through. Didn't get angry at anyone and now see the humor in the situation.

that is actually farily common. Lots of people don't hadle narcotics like codeine well. It is pretty much unheard of however to have the "reverse reaction" she is decribing to benadryl. That would essentally be an antihistimine causing a histimine response, in a word: impossible.

Yes, antihistimes and alcohol don't mix. Both are deperssing your system so you got an overload.

My daughter was the same way with Tylenol with codeine and she did not sleep at all that night. They gave it to her for broken wrist and we learned quickly that she will not take it again. I wasn't mad about it just extremely exhausted the next day. Unfortunately in our case it did not help with the pain as they only wrapped her wrist in an ace bandage rather than a splint so as soon as she saw the Ortho doctor she was doing better with just motrin.

That coukdn't have been any fun! My sister had it in cough syrup once, and believe me once was enough. i don't think I would have wanted to add the pain from a broken arm to the mix! BTW she has the same sort of reaction to decongestants like sudafed. Anybody else see this from kids who react badly to codine? Just curious about the possibility of a correlation.

I haven't tried sudafed on my 10 year old dd. The Oh and as for her broken wrist, her soccer coach accidentally broke it. That was not a fun soccer season. :sad2:

I think that you should THANK your neighbor for keeping his sidewalk CLEAN with bleach. At least he cares enough to do that.

You could have the exact opposite problem...

I have preschool aged boys. I clean their bathroom once a week with diluted bleach water solution. I think it's the safest thing to use to kill germs, viruses, bacteria, etc, while being also one of the most economical.

You need to try to relax a bit. And, possibly educate yourself a bit better about what is harmful and what is actually GOOD to use to clean around your daughter. For example, diluted bleach solution is probably the BEST thing you can use to clean your baby's toys, did you know that?

I haven't read all the replies yet, but was wondering was concentration do you use? like 1:1 with the bleach water solution?

does anyone know.....what is the lowest concentration that can be used and the bleach will still effectively disinfect toys or surfaces?

Clorox is Sodium Hypochorite

NaOCl

The Cl atom is loosely bonded to the oxygen atom the bleaching action is largely due to the decomposition of NaOCL into free oxygen and salt NaCl.

Come on America get a grip the media has set up climate of fear surrounding common useful chemicals and irrational fears are developing because of media hype. No I'm not suggesting that every chemical is safe for a baby to come in contact with but we need a sense of perspective here heck even WATER is poisonous under the right circumstances (Google Water Toxicity)

1/4 cup bleach to 1 gallon water. Here's the link:

I would think the weaker solution would not be completely effective. It is the recipe for emergency drinking water.

Actually its quite common for kids to react to benedryl by getting hyperactive instead of sedated.

The room spinning was kind of neat at first though.....

Its a common relatively legal and cheap college high - cold medicine and alcohol (i.e. illegal if you are under 21, like that has stopped most college students from drinking). Not great on your liver......
