We are taking a weekend trip to Schaumburg next weekend and I'm thinking we're going to Brookfield Zoo on Saturday (they have free admission). I have never been. It sounds like they have quite a few things indoors to do that are still open? Can anyone tell me anything about it? (It will be DH, and DDs - 5 and almost 2). Is there a LOT of walking? Will DD5 be okay trekking it?

The plan will be scrapped if it is freezing out, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will be bearable if we bundle up.

The zoo is always open! Most of the indoor exhibits are open regardless of the weather, although winter is the time they tend to do scheduled maintenance on exhibits, so some may be closed.

It is a lot of walking, but you can rent a wagon or a stroller (or bring your own). They also operate a bus during cold weather called the Polar Express. It's pretty informal; you flag it down when you see it, and they take you to where you want to go. I think there's only one bus though; there have been times my daughter and I have walked all over the zoo and never seen the darn bus! If you can catch it, it's nice.

Not to miss: Tropic World (primates), The Living Coast (penguins, fishies, plus a cool wave machine), and The Swamp (gators, etc, this is a really well done exhibit). There are other indoor exhibits that are smaller and/or don't take quite as much time. When it's cold out I tend to like exhibits where we will be inside a bit longer (those I mentioned) rather than just in and out.

Tip: Food service is limited and expensive. There are no limitations on bringing in lunches. You can also plan to eat before/after. Food service is counter service only in winter.

When you're driving in, the first parking lot you're directed to is the huge one; and it's a good walk from there to even get into the zoo because you go under the street. The second lot (I think it's the South Lot) is a couple dollars more (I think, I know it is for members) but is much closer; you walk right in.

I am a Zoo member and have been since I was small. Have a fun day!

I love Brookfield zoo more than Lincoln Park Zoo! Even if it is cold out they have a ton of indoor exhibits. They also have an indoor family play zoo, which you can get in to at an additional cost. Since it is a large zoo, it will be a lot of walking. I've never been there off season, so I would only assume that the outdoor exhibits would be closed. Have fun!

I live pretty close to the zoo and I take DD4 there almost every week. We always park in the south lot (you may want to call and ask how much it is to park there) which is close to the Hamill Family Play Zoo. The Hamill Zoo is great for little ones. DD4's favorite thing to do there is the craft. They always have 1-2 volunteers holding an animal which can be petted like a guinea pig or a bunny. There is a pretend animal hospital that DD4 loves. There is also an area where they can put face paint on to look like an animal. Across the way from the Hamill Zoo is the Swamp and a little further is the Primate House. There are many more indoor exhibits but they are a bit of a walk. There is a small bus that operates in the winter which might be free instead of the motor safari, but, again, you might want to ask. Have fun!

The 2 children areas are free of charge in the winter. (the Children's Zoo & the Play Zoo). This time of year, my son loves the play zoo alot. you can dress as a bird, be a vet, paint your face, & more. Lots of fun.

If you are willing to spend a little extra money Hamill Family Play Zoo is a must see. There are enough crafts and activitiestoo keep your little ones busy for hours! The dolphin show is also a lot of fun. The zoo is very large, but there is a lot to do indoors. What are your families favorite animals to see?

The only thing that I was going to add is to keep in mind that tolls went up in IL as of Jan 1st. Even if you have an IPASS, they're about twice what they were before.

I'm guessing that you'll either take I294 or I355, both of which are toll roads.

Saturdays and Sundays are free during February so you can save your tickets for another trip. This Sunday there's a dog sled demonstration if you have some flexibility in your plans and you're interested.

When my children were little we always went more often in winter. It's quiet and less crowded. We always visited Australia house with the bats and the exhibit with the giraffes. The bison area is really cool, and the bear exhibit is all new too, I think.

Have fun!

Thank you all for all your advice! I am super excited. We are planning on seeing the Dolphin show too - (cheaper than admission to Shedd's!). I'm thinking we'll bring the sit n stand for my 5 yr old too - that way if we are freezing we can go at our pace and not hers. =)
