Can Canadians purchase duty free items (on the Canadian side) before crossing over to Buffalo? This may be a dumb question but I have never purchased anything on the Canadian side of the border. We will be crossing on Thursday to fly out on Friday and will be staying with family friends in LA for a few days (and then 3 days 2 Disneyland--hurray--had to squeeze some Disney Magic in there !!) before we head off to Hawaii on our cruise and I would like to bring them a bottle of Ice Wine as a thank you. Would it be cheaper to purchase at duty free (& can I purchase it?) or do I have to stick to the LCBO?goodvibes

You can buy duty free --the only thing is you will not be able to carry onboard in your carry on (liquids) so would have to pack in your checked luggage..perhaps if you wrap in some bubble wrap it would be fine, especially a small bottle such as Ice Wine is bottled in?

Does anyone know if it is cheaper to buy at the Canadian Duty Free than LCBO?

It is incredibly creaper at the duty free, you can't even compare the prices to the lcbo. Pick it up at duty free for sure.

Check out www dutyfree ca for the web site of the Peace Bridge Duty Free in Fort Erie, Ont. There's a lot of information on duty free exemptions,
ie. beer is $19.99 a case. Crown Royal 1 litre is approx. $25. A carton of cigarettes $35-$45.

HUGE difference!!!!! We always stop at Duty Free, just as someone else mentioned, don't forget to pack it into your checked luggage before you get to the airport! Enjoy! :goodvibes

Just don't purchase it on the CDN side if you are planning to bring it back home with you! We go shopping in Buffalo a few times a year and last time we asked because there was some really good deals on alcohol, and the cashier warned us that it's only "duty free" if it goes to the US. If it comes back over to Canada, they charge you duty and excise taxes, usually around 40-50%!!!! So that cheap bottle of booze just got really expensive!!!

Sorry, but that is incorrect. As long as you and the bottle of liquor are in the US for 48 hours, you can bring it back into Canada. That one bottle is your entitled exemption, no matter if you bought it at a Canadian dutyfree or a corner store in Buffalo. The first bottle is duty free after 48 hours.

Not a solicitation, but not only am I a DIS'er, but also a Canadian Dutyfree manager of 16 years. If anyone has a question I will do my best to provide an accurate answer. But again, I'm not soliciting.

DW,DD6,DD9 and myself are at ASMO on 9/17 for our first Disney trip!

Ah, that would be why I thought wrong...we rarely stay over for 48 hours if we're just shopping in Buffalo! Thanks for the correction!

Maybe you could answer another question for me though...any suggestions for how I could save myself some of the taxes/duty when we come back with 20+ bottles of wine after our winery tours in Michigan? I love the wine dearly, but it practically doubles the price of every bottle!:headache:

It might be the quantity of 20 bottles that's causing some troubles :)
The first 1.5 litres per adult is duty free after 48 hrs. If you're over that you're subject to the taxes and duties as you know. If you're over by a couple bottles, that will be at the discretion of the customs inspector. If you're over by 16 bottles ....well. We ran into the same problem for our Finger Lakes wine tour. You should try that sometime, it's beautiful down there.
