I am buying a new Digital camera and need help deciding between 2 brands. Of course the decision-making process is tied into my Disney pics. Anyone have an thoughts, either way pls, on the Canon Powereshot S51S and/or the Sony Cybershot DSC H9/B. Both are around 8MP. Canon is 12x optical and Sony is 15x. Canon has availabilty of adding external flash. Help!!:confused3

I bought the Sony H9 a couple months. I liked it mainly because its powered by a rechargable lithium battery which from what I understand is much better then an alkaline powered camera plus the 15x zoom. Its much faster and I hate to keep buying batteries. I looked at a Canon as well - it just might be the same one you mentioned ( I can't remember - it was 12x) but the one I looked at was alkaline battery powered so that was a deal breaker for me. The sad part of my story is I took the H9 back :sad1: - it was a very sad day for me. I absolutely loved this camera but the size of it w/the lens hood on was just too big for me right now. With 3 kids we have some much stuff to carry I just couldn't see myself carrying this around w/me. I needed something more compact & easier to get in & out of my bag so I exchanged my H9 for Sony Cybershot DSC-W90. I love this camera but I would trade it back for the H9 in a heartbeat. If you don't mind the bulkiness of the H9 I'd get that one.

As soon as we travel lighter I will definitely be getting a camera like the H9.
The settings are so easy to understand, the ability to go from automatic to manual is great & the pictures are so clear. The 15x zoom is incredible. Ok I guess I have my point across.

I remember asking the camera person at Best Buy (he was really up on cameras I could tell) about which was better the Sony or the Canon. I had read that the Canon had better clarity - he was surprised that I had read that. The lens maker (I can't remember the name) for Sony was the best. He said for a camera company he likes Canon - they're a camera company selling cameras, Sony is a technology company selling cameras. But between the 2 individual cameras he thought the Sony was the better one.

Not sure how often you'd need external flash.

Good luck and have fun.

I am on my second Casio Exilim and I LOVE IT!!! The first one was damaged (DD3 threw it on the hardwood floor and it shattered):scared1: , so I got another one and it is put away from her now!! I learned my lesson there.

The new one is a 7.2MP and it does video as well!! It was $199.00 at Walmart and it is PINK!! So DH won't carry it around..hahaha

I have done a lot of reading on the Canon S5-is, there is a whole thread on the photography board, canon s3 & s5 users, but I am going to get the Canon S5 (Hopefully for a Christmas present)

Perhaps Cybershot has changed but I have found that if anyone moves, the shot is blurred and useless. Found this out the hard way taking wedding photos for my boss with her new camera - yikes! I was the "official" ceremony photographer and we ended up having to do reshoots later where they posed in order to get usable shots.

My daycare provider has the same problem with her Cybershot.

My dh uses our Canon S1 1S, I use our Canon S3 1S, and my dd's use a Canon Elixim. (I bought these on sale when we could afford it so please don't blow a gasket. lol)

I like them all, but I really like the Canon Elixim because it is small and takes decent pictures. The bigger cameras are powerful, but they are bulkier and a bit heavier. I use our bigger Cannon cameras when we are at home or at a special function and their Canon Elixim when we go on trips. It just works out that way.

You might want to check out www.dpreview.com for reviews and also yes, our own Photography board here.

GL!
