We just traveled with 1 Marathon + 1 Decathlon 2 weeks ago, and it is fine. It is our 2nd trip with both, 5th with the Marathon. We bought the car seat bags w/the shoulder strap and we check them at the curb. We actually take the seats out of my hubby's car and put them in the bags, then curbside check that and the luggage. We take my SUV to the airport, so the kids are in those seats, and the extras are ready to be checked as soon as we get there. We've never had any problems with checking them (damage, etc.).
On another note, we like our Marathons (we have 2 - one for each car) better than our Decathlons. The point where the latch attaches on the shell is easier to use and seems more secure than the Decathlon. That's just personal preference though. My hubby says when DD 3 is out of her Marathons, we will swith DS 15 m into those and get rid of his Decathlons.
