Hi guys.

My son will be 4 next year and doesn't get how to blow his nose yet.

I have tried showing him how, but not working.

So, instead he is congested, like right now with a cold and wipes his nose on his sleeve...which my mil is driving me nuts about:scared1:

She watches him M-F and told me He has got to learn how to blow his nose.. He starts school next year and the teachers are going to be upset if he doesn't know how to do it

I just yes her to death:rotfl2:

When I see him about to rub his nose on his shirt, I stop him and get him a tissue.

But, hey he is 3...Come on..Not like he is 10 and doing this:confused3

So my question is, at what age did your child learn to blow their nose?

My 2nd question is, how did you teach them?

I tried showing him, but he just ends up spitting in the tissue:rotfl2:

Thanks for your help:goodvibes

I know this is on the wrong forum section.

I meant to put it in the family section.

I went to PM the Dis Moderator Team to ask them to move this and it says they do not accept private messages.

So, I pmed Beth E from Family board to see if she can move it.

Sorry about that:goodvibes

Not sure how much I can help.

Dd is now in first grade and she didn't start blowing her nose until she was halfway through kindergarten!

This is what I thought, that he was too little to get it yet.

I am sure you know how MILs can be:rotfl2:

I tried to do the paper chaser game with him, but he a little crabby from having a cold, so all he did was spit in the tissue....LOL

Going to try it again next week

Yeah, I see I got moved:cool1:

My daughter just turned 3 and she is great at blowing her nose. I am sure it is nothing I did - but someone, somewhere (not me) told her about how the elephants blow their noses.

Every time I ask her to blow, she gets all excited, blows into the tissue, and says, "I blow like a BIG elephant mommy!"

So, if you child likes animals, maybe relating it to the elephant and their long trunk (again, I cannot take credit for this - it wasn't my idea but it has worked great with my daughter.)

My son, on the other hand, who is 7, still wipes his nose on his sleeve.............

Lucky You.....Wish someone coulld teach my son some magic way to blow his nose.

I like the animal idea..That is cute...Thanks

I figured Ds does not start school until Sept 2008 and then it is only Pre_K, so not too worries.

Just trying to appease my MIL:rotfl2: Need her for one more year:goodvibes

DD learned when she was 1. I was shocked. She still hasn't figured out how to smell things though.

She was in daycare, so lots of runny noses, plus lots of other kids as models.

Neither of us can remember how or exactly when DS started blowing his own nose, but it was a good while back (he's almost 3.5).

We think it was modeling, b/c I have allergies and he has seen me sneeze and blow my nose a million times.

He's also very "I do it!" for everything else, so the idea of someone else holding a tissue for him is repugnant to him, and he will grab it.

Oh, and this last month we've all gotten a few colds, and sometimes when he knows the nose blow is going to hurt or make his nose tickle, he'll refuse, but then we tell him that he needs to blow his nose out on Emperor Zurg (Buzz Lightyear badguy) and that makes him laugh and he does it. I think he's also blown his nose on bad pirates (how these "people" get small enough to be in tissue I don't know). :rotfl:

Oh and one thing...we don't use Kleenex type of tissues. Those things have weird ingredients, and in my long allergy career, those tissues will Mess Me Up like nothing else. They have fibers that blow off into my eyes, now they make them with lotions and weird things that irritate my nose MORE than the old ones did. So we just use simple toilet paper (we use the recycled paper type, very basic), and that never irritates my nose. So I'd try that, just in case it's the tissue itself that is bothering him, which you wouldn't think it would, since Kleenex has such a good PR department. :upsidedow
