Don't want internet access (probably can't get it for $100 anyway, just wanted to point out I don't want it).

Thanks!

I highly recommend the apple refurbished ones. We bought our daughter a nano last Aug and it was great. I would recommend a nano over the shuffle because she can watch videos/movies as well as music on it.

I havea 8gb coby that I got for $40 and love it. Its been dropped in a snow bank, steped on and once, kickboxed accrossed the room.... It still working great too! Never had any troubles

DD10 has a 4GB iPod nano. She uses to listen to music, but also plays games and watches TV episodes as well. We (me, DD10 and DS16) share the same iTunes music library and each manually sync our stuff.

Sansa and Sandisk is excellent mp3 players. I would check buy.com, woot.com for deals.

Wasn't clear on the internet access. I would like one with a screen where she can watch shows but I don't want her to be able to get on the internet with the device. I think one of the expensive iPods does?

just not ready for her to surf the web in her room yet :)

What about the Zen by Creative labs? Anyone have one of those?

Our family of 4 all have Ipods that came from the Refurbished store. Never had a problem with any of them. That 16GB Nano (previous generation) for $119 is a great unit, and no internet. DS has one of those and love it.

Now if my 20GB ancient antique 5 year old Ipod Color would just give out, I would have an excuse to get and Ipod Touch. DD already has one and I am jealous.... ;)

You can get a refurbished Sansa fuze very reasonably (under $50 for an 8g) online. Dh and I have them and love them. They do just about everything my dd's ipod nano does, and hers was more than twice that. The fuze doesn't have a camera, but does have a great voice recorder. I think the fuze is a much better device. It stays charged longer, and you don't have to deal with itunes or their software. You can add more memory to the fuze with a micro HDSC card.

If your child is a typical 11 year old though, having that "ipod" brand may matter.

I totally agree -- we bought my daughter and I both refurbished ipods two years ago. They have been great! My DD is now 12 and has had an ipod since she was 8. She has always taken good care of it and loves getting itunes cards to download her own music.

I also recommend a refurbished iPod. So far we've purchased 4 of them and all have been brand new in the box with no issues. The first two were shuffles several years ago that we got for $29 each.

Then we became a Zune family and all had 80gb 1st generation Zunes. When the iPod Touch first came out, we won one in a raffle. DD fell in love with it so we gave it to her for getting straight A's all year her first year of mid-school.

DS still loved his Zune, but when DD's iPod Touch started having issues a month ago, we decided to just get her a new one refurbished online. It was DS's birthday, so we got him one, too since his Zune was out of date and getting scratched and worn. They've had their reburished iPod Touches both for a month now and we've had no issues what so ever. They come with the full 1 year warranty.

We love Ipods here! I would suggest a Nano, shuffles don't display the songs and would probably be "uncool" and not hold enough songs very quickly for an 11 yo. We have 4 ipods in the house, 3 were refurbs from apple.com and no problems with any of them.

I would think that the iTouch might not be as durable for a younger kid, though.

Apple Nano is the best choice. We got DD a Sansa and ended up getting a Nano the next year (all the kids have them!). We got her an iTouch last year, it has internet access the Nano does not, they come in neat colors as well.

My DS 9 has Creative Mosaic model, 4GB, got for about $70 on Amazon. He is very happy w/it, but has not tried to watch shows.(screen would be small) We researched a lot of them, and it has built-in speaker, and FM radio(I-pods don't have). It has a cool look w/mosaic pattern-he has blak/gray, they also have pink for girls. You can't use I-tunes for these, but can use Amazon's service, which has been great. When you pruchase through them, I believe you get some free downloads, and you can get GC through Amazon to be used like an I-tunes cards, for gifts for future.

CNET is a good site for researching electronics, you will see reviews, and live video of a person showing you the features of different players. HTH!

I love the Sandisk Fuze !! My dd(12) and I both have one and they are GREAT! No internet access on them, they hold a ton of music, play video, stores pictures, fm radio and voice recorder. Best part is that you can add a micro SD card and extend the memory if you start to run short. Very durable, easy to load music on (just drag and drop) and battery life is fantastic, much longer than our ipods.
