We are thinking of making our pool salt water, I have heard all the good things about it in terms of how it is better for your skin (my one daughter is has bad eczema) and how you don't need to shock it, and no more chemicals but my question is does it taste bad? Does it sting your eyes? What about any open cuts (thinking of DD's rash here not planning on going in with cuts and gashes on our skin) Anything I should know about it? We currently use Bromine and need to put a new liner in so this is a good time to make a change if we decide to go this route.

Thanks for you help!

Well,,,first off, we don't have a salt water pool but friends do. I believe it is different from regular salt water and it doesn't sting your eyes or any of the same things that ocean salt water does. They like it because of the no chlorine smell.

Any pools that we have ever used on our trips to Florida have all been salt water and they are fantastic! I cannot take all the chlorine in the pools here in Canada but we love the water in Florida pools!:) We have never experienced a bad "salty"taste either.:cutie:

That is great to know! Does it leave any residue on your skin or your bathing suit?
Canadian Tire has the pump on sale this week so we are trying to make this decision before Friday.
Thanks!

I've never seen any type of residue and my bathing suits were always okay but DH had his nylon fabric bathing suit fade to a lighter blue than it was originally but that wasn't a problem.:)

We also have friends that are in the process of having a salt water kidney shaped pool built but as of yet..... not using it!lol

We have one of those above ground "blow up the ring" type pools, and according to the Canadian Tire flyer, these pumps can be used on these types too. DH went out Sat AM and bought the pump because it was on sale. I think we're going to go ahead with it. Funny thing is, we used the end of our chlorine pucks last summer, so we have to buy new chemicals this year anyway. My friend has an inground salt-water pool and loves it ... her DS's eyes are very sensitive and he's had no problems with it.

Hope you're able to get your pump ... I'd go buy it just so you know you can get it at the sale price ... just don't open the box and if you change your mind, you can always return it. :)

My DD lives in Florida and their pool is salt water. It tastes a bit salty but not much. One of the best features is that your bathing suits don't get ruined like they do with a chorine pool. Ours here is the traditional chorine and it seems to me that the water in hers is clearer.

I don't know where you live but there is a Comfort Inn in Markham with one and Queen's Landing Inn in Niagara on the Lake has one if you wanted to go check one out. :goodvibes

Do you have to change all of your water to convert to a salt water pool?

I would think there is more to it than just changing your water. More like the proper filtration system. Mind you, I'm only guessing.

I am not 100% sure but I think you need to do a complete water change.. I know when we switched to Bromine from Chlorine we had to a complete water change.

Mousy, we put an inground pool in 3 years ago and went with the salt water option. My cousins put one in the same year and went with chlorine. Our pool does not smell like chorine and my nieces and nephews all say our pool is better on their eyes/skin, etc. I love the lower maintenance factor, the fact that the shock cycle doesn't make the pool off limits and the feel/smell of the water. I'd never consider anything else now. HTH.
