hello Canadian friends! Its been a long time since Ive stopped in here but I needed to ask a favour. Our anniversary is coming up and DHs Grandpa used to make the best date squares. Unfortunately I think the recipe died with him :( All my Canadian cookbooks have ones that I have been underwhelmed with sadly.

Does anyone have a great tried and true recipe that I could make for DH for our anniversary? It would mean a lot to him :) Thanks!

My Grandmther had a lovely recipie which my Mother now has. I don't make it anymore because I am the only one in my family who likes it. We actually never call it date squares but refer to it as matrimonial cake. I will call her tomorrow for it and post it fo you.:goodvibes

Thank you so much! We arent going home to Calgary until July so I wouldnt even be able to hunt for it until then. A call simply wouldnt get it done.

This is funny as I was looking for a date square recipe a couple weeks ago. I love date squares and have some California dates that I need to use up.

My aunt sent me this recipe. I haven't tried it yet but hope to as soon as I get a chance.

Oatmeal Crinkles which you can use with a date filling. If you both like dates you will like these and they keep well.

Oatmeal Crinkles
1 cup shortening or margarine
1 cup brown sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 cup warm water
1 cup rolled oats
1-3/4 cups flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
After mixing this, roll into balls of dough and flatten with a fork. Bake at 350F 8-10 minutes.
When cool they are good as is or you can make a sandwich of them with date filling.
This is DS's favorite cookie recipe and everyone else loves them

Date Filling
1 cup chopped dates.
1/2 cup water
1'4 cup sugar
1 tsp. lemon juice
Cook and stir this mixture until soft, (about ten minutes).

Well the secret family recipie is apparently no secret Grandma got it out of some cookbook:rotfl:
Sorry I could not be of better help:goodvibes
I found this one on the net and I think it is pretty close to the one we do. My Mom was looking for the "secret recipie" today:thumbsup2

• 1 1/4 cup flour
• 3/4 cup butter
• 1 1/4 cup ground rolled oats
• 1 cup brown sugar
• 1 tsp. soda
• Filling:
• 1 cup brown sugar
• 2 cups chopped pitted dates
• 1 cup water
• Juice of 1/2 lemon

1. Mix dry ingredients and cut in butter as you would for pastry. Cook the filling until it is thick. Spread half the first mixture into a greased 8 x 8 " cake pan. Cover this layer with filling and top with remaining crumb mixture. Bake at 300 F for about 1 hour. When cool cut into squares. Freezes well.

This sounds somewhat like my mom's (I haven't looked it up) BUT the directions should read:

Cut while warm, eat the entire pan of squares, and wash the dishes. If, for some reason, you DO have some to freeze: Take out, warm in microwave for 20-30 sec and eat immediately.

My mom's secret recipe:rotfl2: is the pretty much the same but is says use crisco not butter, and only 1/2 cup brown sugar also no sugar in the dates.

Thanks so much! :)

I found out that former FILs "secret cheesecake recipe" was from the Best of Bridge :lmao:

Here's a recipe that has less sugar.

Matrimonial Squares:

Crumb Layer
1 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
1 1/2 c. rolled oats
1 c. packed brown sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. butter/margarine

Measure flour, oats, sugar, baking sode, salt and butter into a large bowl. Cut butter into the ingredients until crumbly. Press slightly over half of the crumbs into a greased 9 x 9 in. pan.

Filling
1/2 lb. dates, cut up
1/2 c. granulated sugar
2/3 c. water, or more

In a saucepan, combined dates, sugar and water. Bring to a boil and allow to simmer until mushy. If mixture becomes too dry before dates have softened enough, add more water then keep simmering until some of the water has boiled away. Spread over bottom crumbs and sprinkle remaining crumbs over top. Press down with your hand. Bake in 350 degree over for 30 min. until a rich golden brown.

Makes 36 squares.
