This may belong on the control freak thread, but...

We live in a Northern climate with a very brief summer. DH and I would spend all day everyday outside, as long as it is not raining. DD (4) hates winter, and I can understand that, but...she also prefers the indoors in the summer. The weather this past week has been fabulous (high 70's , sun-cloud, a slight breeze) and she still prefers reading a book, painting, drawing, etc...

I have completely cut out daytime TV watching to make sure this wasn't a TV addiction, but even then she likes it inside better.:confused3

Anyone else in this situation? I feel guilty having her inside so often!

I grew up in southern California and usually preferred being indoors doing exactly what your DD does! Different personalities. :)

Just be sure she gets enough exercise. I always was involved in ballet and practiced at least an hour a day when young (preschool to early elementary), with that time increasing over the years to more hours than I care to remember!

Although I enjoy some outdoor activities, I still love reading, painting, drawing, sewing, etc. Nothing changed with age! *LOL*

My kid hates me b/c we're indoors more than she likes to be. Her two best friends have big, fenced-in backyards, and can go play at will. Our house sits on a big hill, has a big creek out back and is very hazardous for a 5yr old.

I take her to the park or pool as often as possible, but there is no free-play time outside alone.

We were at the pediatrician's office yesterday and she made sure to tell the doctor how mean I am b/c of it.

My oldest son is like that. We live on 12 acres and he has plenty of room to roam but prefers to be inside unless I'm sitting outside watching them. My youngest is completely different and would stay outside all day long but gets bored after awhile of playing by himself and will want to join his brother inside. This summer I've been making sure we do lots of outside activites but he drives me nuts with wanting to be inside all the time because like you said, when I was younger my mom couldn't keep us in the house. It was different times then, we roamed the neighborhood freely from sun up to sun down and only came in to eat or drink but kids nowadays aren't like that.

When the weather is nice, why can't she read/paint/draw outside? My dd loves to do those things on our back porch or in the back yard.

We have two little boys that couldn't be more different.

Nick loves trucks, riding bikes, riding his little fourwheeler, He learned to do a "power slide" two minutes after getting on it. He goes indoor rock climbing with dh and his older sister, he loves to get dirty, go swimming, play in the snow. He can't sit still for ten minutes, he is never quiet, he gets into everything and pushes the boundries as much as humanly possible. He is the epitome of a rough and tumble little boy.

Xander is the complete opposite, he is very sensitive and afriad of a lot of stuff. He hates the cold, he burns and get a heat rash in the summer, he hates the pool, he hates getting dirty, he screams if the sprinkler gets him wet. He isn't as coordinated and hasn't learned to ride a bike yet and honestly doesn't want to. Instead he likes to play with his thomas trains, mega blocks, magna doodle. He is meticulous about getting things symetrical and having the colors match, wheras Nick wants to make things as big as possible to just knock them down lol

It makes them happy. I try to get Xander to play mega blocks in the yard, or have lunches on the deck so that he does get some sun.

I don't think there is any problem, each kid is different and as long as she is getting enough exercise. Why not get her an easel and have her paint the outdoors, get those new sidewalk paints for the driveway or sidewalks and let her draw you something, maybe get her interested in planting some flowers. Little things that might capture her interest and get her out even if it is for an hour here and there :)

Here is the link to check out the 3d chalk and such, my kids LOVE it!http://www.crayola.com/products/splash/OUTDOOR/3dchalk.cfm
