Apparently those with assigned seats are to show up at check in at least 3 hours before the flight, or you risk losing your seats. This makes it a cheery 3 a.m. at the airport. Ick. Anyone have any experience with AT and assigned seating?

This makes no sense. If you already have a seat assigned, I dont see how they can give it away.

ESPECIALLY if you print your own boarding pass which you can do up to 24 hours before your flight.

I'm flying Transat in a few weeks and none of my docs have mentioned this in any way.

Agreed, no sense at all. But that is what their fine print reads. This was in an email from the Air Transat rep. Could be because we are on a group package, which is quite inexpensive. Anyhow, you give them money for the upgrade (think they call it "Prime") and thereby agree that they can re-assign your seat if aren't at the airport early enough. Deeply stupid, but on an international flight, you have to be at the airport very early anyhow...

I would be surprised if they did, but I believe you when you say it's in the fine print. We got free seat selection because of a promotion, so they better not give them away on our flight! Plus/but, aren't we suppose to show up 3 hours in advance for international flights anyways? Am I the only one that does? Lol

If you've already printed your boarding passes the day before, how would they know if you're at the airport or not? We only fly with carry-on baggage, so we go straight to security and then to the gate. We've never had an issue with them re-assigning our seats, and we never arrive more than 2 hours before.

Yes, you are asked to arrive 3 hours before an international flight. At Pearson that is a necessity.

3 hours is a good frame of reference, but outside of strange small print requiring you to do so (Lose your seats? Really, Air Transat?) you can still make it if you've checked in online and arrive 2 hours beforehand. Mind you, I do not recommend this, but it can be done. Personally, I find 2.5 hours to be my sweet spot for international flights - early enough to avoid panic over making it through, late enough that I'm don't get impatient waiting to board.
