Something kind of crazy happened to me on Friday afternoon on New York's Belt Parkway. Now for those of you who are unfamiliar with the Belt, it is the typical NY highway that everyone else in the country would associate with a NY highway... packed to the gills with no one really sure what the speed limit is or even how many lanes truly exist. It's every man(or woman in this case) for himself. After a series of people stopping short, again a very common occurrence here, a man in the left lane lost control of his car and slammed into one of the very tall light posts. I was in the middle lane with the three kids and our new puppy. My husband was driving his mother's car ahead of us with my MIL. In slow motion it seemed, I watched as the light post started to sway, spin around in a circle and came crashing down onto the three lanes of traffic. Somehow no one was in the right lane and I was able to swerve over just in time. We were hit and from the sound and feeling of the impact, I thought it was bad. We have a Chrysler Town and Country. The post just barely brushed the driver's side window and the sliding door handle. There was a small dent just above the sliding door. handle as well. So there we were, on the side of the Belt and of course traffic just drove up onto the grass around the light post blocking the road. We NYers have places to go ya know! In any case, I was so relieved that no one was hurt and the damages seemed so minor that we just left. I think we were in more danger standing on the side of the Belt! There was a police officer with the man who hit the pole and he walked away from it as well. His car wasn't in too bad of shape either! I guess my only mistake was in not getting the guy's insurance info, but I didn't really want to hang around on the Belt any longer. So that was our crazy story. BTW, in horror, my husband watched the whole thing through his rearview mirror. Can you imagine what thoughts would be going through your head with this happening to your whole family!
