OT: 2nd grade project a bit much?

At the same time though, it can be useful to realize that our personal experiences are not necessary the norm. As I recall there were even some teachers who posted on this thread who were not 100% in agreement with the particulars of this project and/or it's timing.

IDK I guess I just think a post such as this should help us all to understand that schools in this country do in fact do things very differently. Perhaps we should this keep this in mind when we add our two cents. Some posters were more than alittle rough themselves when asserting their opinion that 'of course it's appropriate'. Kind of felt like they should have closed their comments with "you silly goose". That always drives me bananas:)

You are right. We have to remember, we're all on the same side. We all have our opinions, methods, and experiences we want to share. I don't think anyone can say the way they do something is better than what someone else is doing. Especially if we are seeing the results we want and need to in our children.

Now you guys have got me really worried. My DS is in 5th grade and he gets projects to do as well, but he's more independent and doesn't need so much assistance. I know it gets tougher the older they get, and I totally expect that. Writing and researching skills are very important as you've pointed out, I can't argue with that. I've been thru enough education myself to know that is true. And to push yourself is a good thing as well. I guess I"m frustrated by the whole timing of the project and that we were given no advance warning this was being sent home. One of my friends had no idea about it, until I just asked what her thoughts were. Her DD hadn't given her the paper and I guess she didn't find it in the backpack. so now they're scrambling to get everything on a holiday wknd when the library is closed today and tomorrow.
Yes, I will send the teacher an email and let her know that I'm unhappy w/the timing of this and ask that she give us a heads up next time around so we're not caught offguard.

Thanks for the input!

I'm just curious why the teacher should have to give you a head's up on a homework assignment?? Why is more work required of the teacher so you are not caught "offguard" by a homework assignment?? I am really lost on this.

I have a 2nd grader who would have no issues do this assignment and it would not take her an entire week to do it. Of course she is constantly reading books about people that interest her as well as other things that interest her (her current reading books are about numbers and math) and are AR testable.

If I sound crabby forgive, I'm tired, but if you'd read the initial post, you would've seen, it wasn't just any old homework assignment. It was a project, a fairly detailed research project and completely out of the norm for them. In fact the first one of this kind we've seen. I don't expect the teacher to tell us every single little paper that is coming home. However, when there is something that will require more work of both of us, it would be nice to know. In fact, I received an email from the teacher today about upcoming things. Many teachers have posted on here and commonly send home monthly, and some even weekly emails just to keep parents up to date on what is going on in class. This is wonderful, and I really appreciate it when it happens. I don't know about your children, but mine dont' always tell me all the info I need to know when I say, 'how was math today?' or 'what kind of homework do we have today?' some things slip their minds.
