Talk about a snub from the Acadamy...

EXCLUSIVE: Oscars Won’t Perform Both Nominated Songs From ‘Rio’ Or ‘Muppets’

By NIKKI FINKE AND PETE HAMMOND

EXCLUSIVE… UPDATE: It was bad enough that just about every eligible tune in the Best Original Song category was omitted from this year’s Academy Awards nominations. Or that, due to their complicated voting system, the music branch of the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences saw fit to nominate only two songs: Rio’s “Real In Rio” and The Muppets’ ”Man or Muppet” when well-known artists like Elton John, Mary J. Blige, and Sinead O’Connor also had terrific songs in the mix. But now Deadline has learned that neither nominated song will be performed during the Oscar telecast as things stand now. We understand that both studios — Rio‘s Fox and The Muppets‘ Disney — formally protested the decision to skip but received turn-downs. ”It seems like a huge missed opportunity to me, and we certainly tried,” one song insider just told us. Said another song insider: “It doesn’t make sense. They could have so much fun with Muppets and Rio staging.”

Though this decision sounds firm because of the telecast’s pressure-cooker time constraints, some of those affected hope all-powerful Academy Awards telecast producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer still have a work in progress. “The show is not locked yet. Decisions about this and other things continue to be evaluated by the team trying to produce the most entertaining 3 hours possible,” one authoritative source just emailed us. “Someone ‘leaking’ this possibility to you is just another way for people to try and influence the creative direction of the show. And there have been Oscar shows that did not have the nom songs performed.” Indeed Alan Carr’s infamous 1989 Oscars performed no songs, and another recent broadcast presented a clip reel of the warbling. Hey, for what it’s worth, we want the songs every year.

They need better songs, I guess. Like, "It's Hard Out There For a Pimp."

:sad2:

I was really looking forward to this, and I was so bummed when I heard this. I was really looking forward to seeing Marshall and Sheldon singing with the Muppets on stage!

Rio could've been a show stopper! The staging would have brought the house down.:headache:

Seems like a snub to a perceived "non-adult" nature of the Muppets and Rio. Just another reason not to watch the Oscars this year either.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner! I seldom hold the same opinion as The Academy so the only reasons for me to watch are the opening monologue (if the host is appealing), the year in tribute montage, and the live performances such as this.

Todd..nice to see you posting back on the boards again.... :-)

I haven't left, but for work, no snow means no slow. Good for the bottom line & bank account, bad for a post count.

Thank you for reminding me of the phrase 'Academy Award Winners Three Six Mafia'.

Living in Memphis, I continue to be inundated with that song quite often despite my avoidance of rap at most costs. Three Six are still local heroes around here.

I loved Hustle & Flow, its a gritty movie but a great one & i'm happy the song won overall. However this year everything is predictable & there are no suprises in the big awards. The races are small at best even though most of the 9 nominated movies(i.e. 5) do deserve to be there but the rest are only there due to a technicality. I follow the award season closely, this is one the biggest times of the year for me & my best friend. From Critics Choice to The Oscars, we follow everything show by show.

But onto the topic, first off it is ridiculous that there are not 5 nominees for the Oscars & that they went with only 2(& being a Flight of the Conchords fan i'm happy that Bret or Jemaine will be an Oscar winner after Sunday) This is one of yet another reason to be upset with the Academy this year(don't get me started about the Drive & Albert Brooks snubs) as it doesn't make much sense in a season where Billy Crystal returns as the host. I get that he will have a lot of very humorous banter but he's also known for his show stopping musical numbers. So it makes no sense to cut the performances.

Then again I could talk about the Oscars for hours & this weekend I will. At least Kermit & Miss Piggy are presenting this year so even though they can't sing, they will still be a part of the procedings.
