Oscar Party?

Hi Everyone!

With the Oscar nominations this morning I'm in full Oscar Party mode. Woo hoo! Go Johnny Depp!

I have an increasingly-bigger party every year. It started off with two girlfriends over for dinner and giggles and this year, has turned into a 15 person shindig, complete with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes, gift bags (just like the stars get tee hee) and food named after the nominated movies (i.e. Lord of the Onion Rings).

I was just wondering if anyone else has a party or get-together for the Oscars, and if you do anything special.

Ours is such a giggle fest, we just mock everyone. "Why is she wearing that dress? It makes her butt look too big. Nice tie, doofus. What the @$#! is THAT? Well that's one way to save money - don't have your hair done, just stick your finger in a socket!"

If anyone is interested, I can post some more specifics about what we do.

That sounds like fun. I just watch the show with my boyfriend. I can't seem to get a party going on Sunday nights.

Some friends of ours are hosting an Oscar party, too. I think it's formal, so I bought a black velvet dress this weekend. However some people seem to think it's "costume" - guess I'd better find out, huh?

The Lord of the Onion Rings is a great idea. So yes, please tell us some more of your plans. Sounds like you've got some good ones.

Your Oscar Party sounds like a lot of fun. It's usually just me and my one friend watching the show, playing the Oscar game. No prizes, just some fun.

Okay, you asked for it!

Invitations go out with a printable ballot to be brought with the night of the party. There are also instruction to enter the pool on Yahoo, group name and such. Yahoo tracks all the points, so we find it really easy to do it that way.

Everyone gets a gift bag, just like the nominees and presenters get. This year, I found little purse-like party favor bags (real nominees get a Hermes bag this year) and are filled with 2 or 3 'fabulous gifts'. This years are a gourmet dining certificate ($1 gift cert to McDonald's) and fine Swiss timepieces (play watches from dollar store). Last year was big jewels (big ugly party favor rings), loads of cash (play money) and fine champagne (I found wedding bubbles in tiny champagne bottles).

Last year it was winner take all for one 'big' prize. It was called the fabulous spa package. It consisted of a bottle of Calgon, a bath sponge, cheap candles, a Cosmo, and a sign for the bathroom door that said "Quiet Please-Fabulous Spa Package In Progress".

This year we are doing something a little different with the top prize, we decided to do 1st, 2nd and 3rd, and it costs $5 to enter the pool.

3rd prize - Movie Package
$5 Blockbuster gift card, popcorn-sized bowl, microwave popcorn, Junior Mints and Dots.

2nd prize - Gaming Package - Just like Vegas but totally different.
$15 scratch lotto tickets, light up dice, blackjack set with cards and blackjack felt.

1st prize - Fabulous Trip to Jamaica!
Travel Video to Sandals in Jamaica, Small tube of sand, sunglasses, sunblock, tropical drink mix set, nice bottle of rum, and I'm still looking for a rosta hat or some silly dread lock thing. Instructions: Make tropical drinks and start drinking. A lot. turn on all the lights in the room and put on the sunglasses. Keep drinking. Apply sunblock. Keep drinking. Dump sand on floor. Keep drinking. Insert video into VCR. Keep drinking. Enjoy sitting in the sand, your beautiful resort, and all that Jamaica has to offer. It will be just like being there!

Most of the stuff in the gifts is from the dollar stores and from clearance sales.

So that's the plan. I have to come up with some more Best Picture related food. Any ideas?

And ... just realized that we are almost switching weather for the same dates... heading to mountains of VA on Thursday night, back late Sunday night! (you get the bonus night of Monday....)

Ooooh, I forgot that I did have one Seabuscuit idea, although it's quite stupid...

I'll make Pillsbury crescent rolls, lay them in a basket sideways and call them C-buscuits. Get it? C- buscuits?

I know, I know, it's unbearably lame. But, that's the whole theme of the party.
