When I was there last December the "official" time was 6:00,but they were turning them on at 5:45.I would suggest being there at 5:40 in case they are doing that during your trip.It is really great to see the lights as they are turned on for the night.
We were there Saturday around 6 when the lights were turned on.
They play the traditional holiday music they normally have. Then approx every 10 minutes they had fake radio type chatty banter about the Osborne Lights (history, trivia, etc) Then they play a song from the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, everyone claps and cheers and this pattern repeats.

Were crowded during Fantasmic when I went to see them. But it's magical - possibly more so - when it's busy. By the way, the video doesn't do it justice, but it is a nice appetizer.
