The calendars say the MGM closes at 8, Fantasmic is at 8 and the Osborne Lights from 6-8 on the night I plan to go.

Will the Osborne Lights be turned off at 8 or will they still be lit so I can see them while everybody is at the 8PM Fantasmic show?

Subscribing - would like to know this info for our first evening at WDW EVER!!!! 1/6-wanting to see the lights and we are so happy to be able to catch them before they are gone!

The Osborne Lights attraction presented an unusual
problem for MGM.
When they were "acquired" by Disney from the Osborne
family (not OZZIE, BTW) there was a huge amount of
national publicity about them.
Disney got a lot of "mileage" out of having them and
they needed to DISPLAY them for lots of guests to see
(after dark).
But...
Even in the winter months, it simply does not get
really DARK in Florida until about 6pm.
So the lights can't be properly viewed until that
time.
(They simply are NOT a daytime or even "regular hours"
attraction).
And the MGM park usually closes (except EMH) only an
hour or so after dark.

Since Disney spends a major (MAJOR) amount of time and
money to set-up, promote, fund the electricity and
CM's and (after the holidays) remove and store these
hundreds of thousands of lights, they needed a way
that guests could actually VIEW them.
(Otherwise, what's the POINT?)

So since, at sunset, MOST (up to 7,000) guests in MGM
are SITTING IN THE FANTASMIC! THEATER and can't SEE
the lights as it gets dark... AFTER the show, the CM's
actually ENCOURAGE the exiting crowds from Fantasmic!
to go over and see the Osborne Lights.
Even though the rest of the park is closed, the lights
are in full glory, and there are even some concessions
open for refreshments.

There are some nights when the OLights are being used
for a private "event" and regular guests are not
allowed in.
You simply will not KNOW about this unless you stop at
Guest Relations that day and ask if the OLights will
be available after Fantasmic!

As for how late?
If Fantasmic! is at 7pm, then its over at 7:25pm, most
guests are out of the theater by 7:50pm and headed to
the Osborne Lights.
I'd estimate that they would keep the OLights open for
a hour-plus, so, say 9:15pm-9:45pm would be the
approx. wrap-up.

On EMH nights, the OLights should be on and open to guests until the EHM is concluded.

The dates for 2007 are November 12, 2007 - Jan. 6, 2008.

I haven't seen them yet and am looking forward to it in December.

But, from the above posts, it sounds like they'd be better served to present the lights in late-night parks, like Epcot or MK?:confused3 Or maybe there's not a dark enough area in those parks, attractions there too bright?:surfweb:

We love the Osborne lights at MGM! I do miss the lights on the houses - since they've switched them to New York Street, but they are still great! We had hot chocolate and sat on the curb and "people watched" while it snowed! Just a little WDW magic in Florida. I do agree - it would be nice if they stayed open later, but we went a couple of times during our stay and it wasn't crowded.

What do you mean the lights were on houses?

I was going to go last year....but the short hours didn't make sense, and my Dad didn't want to go for such a short window between sundown and park close...it didn't seem to make sense to me either???

As I said, they don't generally shut down as early as posted.

In case you're not kidding about the houses...
before they built the Lights, Motors, ACTION grandstand, the Back-lot Tour featured a neighborhood of "set houses" with completed frontal exteriors and empty shell interiors.
That was the original location of the O-Lights for a few of the early years they were at MGM.

On Sunday Dec 9 we are doing teh candlelight processional at 6:45, then heading to MGM for EMH, and from what a few people have said the lights are still on, I sure hope so since that is the only time we can get over to MGM for dark:)

The O-Lights are open for PM EMH.

So enjoy the shows!!

Hi MarkStudy - As Robo said they used to have an area of houses that were part of the backlot tour at MGM - they were torn down/removed when they put in the MotorCars attraction. One of the houses was used in the Golden Girls housefront for the TV show. I can't remember if the other houses were "famous" but on the tour they talked about how studios could use just the shell of a house or a house front for exterior shots of TV shows or movies. :goodvibes

How would you rate the old light show vs. the new light show.... on the 1-10 scale?

Is it worth a trip, just to see the lights now that they are only on the New York false street?

Sounds like the only night to go is durring the Extra Magic Hours... I hate the idea that Disney shuts it down on random nights for private partys. ( We got dropped at House of Blues last trip because they scheduled a private party at the last moment, I felt like a little guy that didn't count...oh well, we bounced back )

The show is actually much bigger now.

Both locations work just fine for me.

Here's a short video of the Osborne Lights (Streets of America location) DANCING to "Trepak" (Nutcracker) by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra (30 seconds)
(Sorry that this is just a hand-held shot from my STILL Camera, but its a good example of the lights.)

Sorry that the quality must be so severely reduced for posting on the web.

Thanks :thumbsup2

How do you rate the new vs old show? I'm collecting rating for those of us who haven't been yet.
