We've been playing around with Photoshop on some of our favorite Disneyland photo's.* There's a photo effect called The Orton Effect, where you create two transparent layers of the same photo, one extremely blurry and one very crisp, sharp and very vibrant in color.* You overlay them on top of one another to give you this dreamlike quality to the photo's. Disney photo's seem to work perfect for this effect.* Only two are not Disney photos obviously, but from a very old cemetery here in town and one from Oak Alley Plantation in Baton Rouge.Take a look

Wow!

Very cool.

Dreamlike, yes; but almost "hyper realisitc" too.

If that makes any sense. :rotfl:

No that does make total sense. The vibrant colors, make it almost TOO real, but I love the effect. It's addictive. It's strange how it will work more with some photo's then others.

Plus, it gives me something to do when Texas becomes an icebox like it has today. I don't want to go outside and play....

Pity you're not here. It's perfect "lounging by the pool" weather here in Sunny Florida! :thumbsup2

You're just mean. :)

Nope. Just saying that it's a pity you're not here. We've got a lovely patio and pool. Peferct for a pool party today.

If I was mean, I'd say "neener neener neener! you've got snow, and I'm barefoot wearing shorts by the pool!":lmao:

looks like hand tinting to me.

Where is that effect - what version of PS?

OH, That IS mean. I just left "Sunny Florida" on Tuesday and am now expecting 4 - 6" of SNOW:scared: in S***ty Chicago. Good Lord, my tan might fade!

Great Pics, BTW, sorry for the hijack:).

ummm we are on our way over :)

Zeitzuge.........that is a really cool effect.....love it........this might sound dumb but does it matter how you layer them or not since they are both transparent,
i am going to try this

I have sort of a cheat sheet to do this that I THINK is understandable.
BTW, I added a few WDW photo's for those WDW nuts out there. :)

1. Open desired image and save to desktop as different name.
2. Right Hand Side: Right click on “Background” and Duplicate Layer.
3. Rename: “Sharp”.
4. Right click on Sharp layer and duplicate layer.
5. Rename: “Sharp Copy”.
6. Right Hand Side: click Normal/Screen.
7. Top Side: click Layer/Merge Down
8. Right Hand Side: Right click Sharp/Duplicate layer.
9. Rename Blurry.
10. Click on Blurry: Top Side: Filter/Blur/Gausian Blur.
11. Adjust blurryness.
12. Right Hand Side: Normal/Multiply.
13. Adjust “Sharps” Saturation: Top Side: Image/Adjustments/Hue Saturation.
14. Adjust either layer if needed.
15. Save PSD to desktop.
16. Top Side: Layer/Flatten Image.
17. Save as jpeg to desktop.

If this doesn't make sense, let me know. I'm not that great with Photoshop, but if you google Orton effect, you'll find tons of ways to do it, step by step.

I'm still using Photoshop 7.0 but you should be able to do it with older or newer. Even Picasa has an Orton Setting, making it easier. You can even change one layer to be B/W and the other color to give even a different Orton effect. The effect isn't a setting on PS, but just a list of steps to create it.

Oh - Okay now I get it- I thought it was a filter effect.
I'm on CS2 -PS 9.8

Nice look though. :thumbsup2

Wow -- The castle looks incredible!!!! Probably the prettiest daytime shot I've ever seen -- bar none. :thumbsup2

:thumbsup2 So beautiful! What a great effect...

Thank you both. We're working on framing about 10 8x10's and putting them together in a collage setting in the "disney" section of our office, along with all of our framed pins. Looks like someone threw up Disney....

Great! I love photography and playing with photographs.... you know in all my spare time :confused3

You did a great job! I can't wait to see more :)

WOW...those a fan-flipping-tastic!!!!

Wow. Just ... wow. I love the magical effect of these photos. I have to say that my heart actually skipped a beat when I saw the pics of the castle, particularly the WDW castle.

You've piqued my interest. I'm going to play with this. Thanks for the tutorial! :goodvibes

Can I send DH over to your house for a Photo Shop tutorial? Oh, and there is no way I am going to allow him to buy it to use at home, so you might have him visiting FREQUENTLY. We do have Picasa on my laptop.
