Tomorrow is turkey day and I am away from home. I live on an island with a lot of "orphan" friends. Let me just say, I have never looked forward to thanksgiving more. Pot Luck, wine, bunch of 20-somethings deep frying turkey, wearing flip flops and shorts, having a great t-day. About 10-15 of us or so will get together for a great sunny, 85 degree night. Anyone ever been to an Orphans Thanksgiving before?

Early in DH's career (chef) we did this with the other young chefs as we were all away from home. I have the best memories of those times. I see you are from St Croix. DH was the chef at Carambola Resort after Hurricane Hugo. We celebrated thanksgiving with the managers who were living on the resort and the linemen who were putting the island infrastructure back together. It was an incredible time to be down there and a very memorable holiday.

Sounds like fun--we used to have friends over that couldn't travel on Thanksgiving but we were in MN and it was cold and we usually had snow but it was still fun.

Sounds like a good marketing idea for vacationers to your area :thumbsup2 Travel over Thanksgiving, have a huge party for Thanksgiving-everyone pays for the meal obviously-could be a nice money maker for you.

I've had several! One while stationed in Korea - there's lots of "orphans" there, several with just me and a couple friends, but my best was were I wasn't the orphan, really, I was the host. Ok - half the host. DH and I hosted Thanksgiving for all his troops that didn't go home. Not an unusual occurence in the military, but it was my first as a spouse, not a soldier, and it was a total adventure. I didn't cook, let alone cook Thanksgiving Dinner. I had 22 young men I hadn't met before that day show up - and it was awesome. Dinner was great, they were a lot of fun, and they were so happy to have a home cooked "real" Thanksgiving. It stands out as my most very favorite Thanksgiving ever!

And - we never have Thanksgiving that at least one "orphan" doesn't show up. The military taught me that family isn't necessarily defined by blood, and as such, there's always a few places at the table for "extra" family.

Actually I've never even heard of it before, but I hope you have a great day! :thumbsup2

Every year when my ex was in the service and we were away from home.
Some of my best holiday memories!
Have fun!

Oh yeah, I've been to one of those, while living on an island. We all worked for a night club, were in our 20's - early 30's. We set up a big table on the dance floor and had a huge dinner during the afternoon, the food was great, the company was fun and the wine flowed. It was a blast.

Sure. I hosted one for about 5 years when I was single. I still live away from family and celebrate every year with people I'm not related to who also live far from family.
