Orlando Crime....

Sad to see Orlando near the top of the list (or bottom in this case) for most dangerous cities.

Well, I would like to see what kind of crimes and have it broken down. Los Angeles is rated as "safer" than Orlando according to this list. I bet you dollars to donuts that there were more murders and other violent crimes in Los Angeles and San Francisco than there were in Orlando.

They are counting straight numbers of crimes; so a city that has had only say 100 incidents will rate safer than a city that has 102 incidents. Well an incident could be a murder or it could be a shoplifter.

They're not counting all incidents, they're counting "Part One" crimes in the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting system. IIRC, that includes murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, and auto theft. As noted above, that includes some violent and some non-violent crimes.

The ratings are also usually calculated by number of crimes per 1,000 population, so an unusual spurt in one area in a small community could result in a huge increase in their crime stats. Because of their populations, you'll rarely see NYC, Chicago, Houston, LA, Philadelphia at the top of the list, but they might be more risky to visit than St. Louis, which came in worst this year.

You really have to look at the detail of the stats to see what might concern a visitor. For example, I'd be much more concerned about the robbery rate in a community I am visiting than the murder rate, because as a visitor I'm much more likely to be a robbery victim. And I wouldn't be much concerned at all with the burglary rate as a visitor, but I sure would if I lived there.

Also, we have to also remember that if you're at WDW, you are a LONG way from the incorporated city of Orlando. Even MCO is quite a ways from downtown.

Patient: "Doctor, it hurts when I do this."

Doctor: "Don't do that."

Moral of the story, don't go to Orlando. (I also agree with the previous post, without a break down of the statistics, the list by itself is not of much value.)

I agree with JimMIA on every point he made. In addition, I'd add that the section of town you're visiting makes a huge difference.

And if you look at the list, it appears that St. Louis edged out Detroit again for the second time within a week! :rolleyes1

Well, I would be willing to trade Memphis#13 for Orlando#25 !!!! At least the crime is a little better and I would be CLOSER to Disney !!! :goodvibes

You really have to compare apples to apples, you can walk the streets of Phila., NY, Charleston. and Orlando any time of night without worry. Just make sure your walking the right streets. These cities have high crime areas but they also have extremly safe tourist areas.

My mother and I were watching the Orlando news on this past trip and it seemed that almost half the news cast was crime that happened that day or the night before.

Also it was noted that Orlando had more murders than Detroit. We laughed and joked that they all moved to Orlando because there aren't any jobs up here anymore :teeth:

LOL, aren't you glad WDW isn't in Orlando? Last I looked it was listed as either Reedy Creek or Lake Buena Vista.

We were there last week and they had a series of vehicle break ins on I-Drive. They were targeting the restaurant parking lots frequented by tourists.

Another plus for the Disney Dining Plan and Magical Express :wizard: :goodvibes

We have relatives that work at WDW and live near Orlando. They say violent crime is indeed bad (as it is in most of Florida's big cities) However, it is very safe on WDW property. How many of us DVC members spend time off property anyway? And to respond to another poster, LA's per capita violent crime IS lower than Orlando. Sorry, you can't argue statistical facts.

One thing we Marlins fans have learned is not to get TOO cocky when you win the World Series.

After all...it only happens every 6-7 years! :cheer2:
