Orlando Area Unemployment

For folks wondering why it is so hard for Disney to find lots of good help for WDW, here's why:

Unemployment - June 2006
Orange County - 3.1%
Osceola County - 3.1%

Compare that with Miami (3.8%), Atlanta (5.0%), Charleston SC (5.9%), Charlotte (4.8%).

Yup! When Mc Donalds is paying $15/hour for opening and closing shifts and WDW is paying all of $7 an hour...

MN's unemployment rate is about 2.4%. People are begging for workers. It all comes down to supply and demand though, Disney doesn't have to pay well to attract workers.

That figure probably includes people like someone I know down there who filed for unemployment but got a job right afterward.

True, but that would be the case for the figures for any city. Orlando's labor crunch is just that much more extreme.

What's obviously needed is a higher minimum wage.

If you think WDW's problems are bad DLR's are probably triple that. The most recent estimate has new CM's either quitting or being fired within 90 days. They have been holding job fairs left and right and just cannot get quality employees to work there. The unemployment rate in that area is also very low right now.

They've been holding regular job fairs for over a year. They hold one about every three months in the clubhouse in my community.
